I seem to recall that the testing board changed the scoring method on the SATs a few years back, inflating the scores. Does anyone know if this was applied retroactively...?

Cause... I'm looking at my online re-application to UT right now, and they've got my verbal score 60 points higher than it was in 1991 when I took it.

    No complaint. Just curious.

I believe UT used a scale that adjusted the old scores to new scores for mine when I got there.

I heard it was because of inflation.

I think the change took affect in '95 if I'm not mistaken.

It makes sense that they could give your scores with the change retroactively, though.

I think there have been two relatively recent changes. The first occurred when the SAT moved from a 1400 to 1600 scale. The other occurred when they made the test easier a few years back. No idea why they did either.

Both were attempts to cover up the dropping scores of our uneducated youth.

Meanwhile us "not so youth" are seeing our scores rise! By the time I'm an old man, I hope to finally have that 1600 I wanted so badly.

What does the SAT have to do with education?

Actually, they are making changes to the TAAS. It wont even be called the TAAS next year. :)

It will be harder and known as the TAKS (pronounced tax) test.

I've heard reports that colleges don't look at SAT scores as much or as closely as they used to

I graduated in '96, and when I was applying for schools, I was told that the top 3 things they looked for were, in this order:

    1. Percentage of AP classes taken
    2. ACT/SAT scores
    3. High School GPA/Class Rank

But that was 6 years ago.

    :)

About time they make it a real test instead of the joke it currently is.

It was not, because at the same time ETS changed the format of several of the sections (e.g. allowing calculators for math).

Since I am pretty much settled on going to UT-Austin, I signed up to take 9 APs, heh.

Personally, I hated the verbal section. If you don't know a particular word then you can't answer the question even if you have good reasoning skills. It was very biased.

However, I can't think of a better solution. A written section sounds very subjective.
