If memory serves correctly, Bruce Willis better be breaking out his checkbook - something about a million dollar check to the solider who captures him...

    :D

    definetly great news
and the most positive thing out of this should be the results:
all the loyalists to saddam viewed him as their leader. whatever he would say, they would follow. When these followers see Saddam surrendering without any resistance to the troops, their faith in him decreases. This is a man who hasnt said much except to fight back, yet he didnt even fire a bullet from his gun. This is a man who said he would commit suicide before he surrenders, yet this man gave up and is a coward. If he had fought back, he wouldve been viewed as a martyr, yet he didnt, so now, they're lost and have no leader and cause

As a flaming, bleeding heart socialistic liberal, I take exception to your broad swipe here. This news has nothing to do with political affiliation. But instead of talking about what Saddam's capture means to the "war" on terror, you blast Americans for not sucking Bush off. As if Saddam's capture is a victory only to be celebrated by Republicans.

I'm ecstatic about his capture and have said so in at least two forums here. His capture marks perhaps the greatest achievement so far -- it's fantastic news. Sure, finding weapons of mass destruction would be nicer (and more pertinent), but that doesn't take away from this great news.

You often make great posts, T_J, but until you quit looking at every issue as a Republican/Democrat debate, it's hard to take your righteous indignation too seriously.

I'm not American. I know there are no weapons of mass destruction.

Oh, and the only reason the political environment in the middle east is being toppled is to support Israel. That's what I personally believe.

One by one the U.S. is trying to wipe out the threats to Israel. Iran and Syria will no doubt follow. However, I don't think those attempts will be as succesful as the one against Iraq.

I guess it will all blow up some day and we'll find out.

Or maybe Bush won't get re-elected. Who knows.

Does anyone think the violence in Iraq is going to die down?

I wonder how they'll react to this in the next few days.

This has been my worst fear Sane. Now he's become a martyr to a lot of very determined people.

    :(

I've been having a bad feeling about this all day.

Sam where in New York are you?

A martyr? Through this morning's pictures and videos he was absolutely humiliated and exposed for the coward he is. Nobody could possibly consider this clown a martyr after seeing that on tv. He's been reduced to the lowest of the low to the entire world.

I agree. He wasn't defiant or energized -- he looked almost relieved.

    Me.

I thought I saw something on the news that said the explosion at the hotel was caused by someone trying to siphen gas from a tanker truck...while smoking a cigarette...

As far as him being a "martyr", hamas has indicated that they are pretty pissed off at him for not even resisiting capture. They now think he's a coward, not a martyr.

yup...thats why its great we got him alive. he didn't even try to fight even though he had the chance to. 2 AKs and a pistol and all he did was give up without a fight.

When the leader of a cause or establishment is captured, killed, etc.. the most common response is a wave of retaliation from the most faithful followers, followed shortly by the dissipation of the sect.

At least that's how it usually goes. I expect to see the same here, but I hope the violence is kept to a minimum.

Pal, if that's your take, then I think you need to change your handle. The political environment in the middle east is being toppled to protect America and American interests. Israel??????? I lived in Arabia for a while and know that your point of view is shared by many middle easterners who have clearly overestimated the lengths to which the US will go to protect Israel. I think you and people like you have allowed your passions with regards to the Palestinian-Israeli issue cloud your judgement and logic. Everything that America does is not a "Zionist" movement against the Arabs. Israel is America's ally, but I can assure you that no American ally short of maybe Britain is worth going through this much trouble and cost in order to protect. It's really simple. Islamic Fundamentalists bombed the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia killing 20 American servicemen................the fundamentalists were warned. Islamic fundamentalists blew up the American embassy in Nairobi.......................again the fundamentalists were warned. Islamic fundamentalists bombed the U.S.S. Cole......................again, no action, just a warning. Then Islamic Fundamentalists flew 767's into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon killing thousands of people........................warnings were no longer acceptable to the American people and since Arab states seem incapable or unwilling to suppress Islamic Fundamentalists, the US decided they had to force the issue and force these governments and peoples to change. Please stop viewing everything America does from your religious perspective. These current events may be a crusade to you, but to Americans like myself this war has as much to do with Zionists vs Muslims as it has to do with peanut butter. We simply will not allow Islamic Fundamentalists to change our way of life and that's all there is to it. I'm sorry to the many non-fundamentalist Arabs in the middle east that are in the middle of this, but maybe you should direct your anger at the inaction of your own governments to deal with the problem appropriately.

From everything I've read about that regime, I would guess that many of his "supporters" were loyal to him only because they were afraid for their lives along with the lives of their loved ones. You have to wonder how seeing him captured on TV would affect their "loyalty". Especially since he just gave up like the little sissy boy that he is. :D

I don't expect to see a ton of violence or anything.

You'll probably see war lords pop up here and there like in Afghanistan, hopefully we can control that though.
