Sigh. I knew what you were going to say before you even said it. I think that taking something "personally" and taking something too "seriously and literally" are a lot alike in some respects.
In other news (besides posters arguing) The US has caught a couple other former Iraqi officials, including the locations of a number of rebel locations. Thanks in part to documents in Saddam's briefcase he had in his arms when he was caught.
Thanks for the tip... I did go over and read the Deanblog (though admittedly I only read an unscientific sampling of the hundreds of comments). I don't see any of the devastation, chaos and despair you refer to. I do see some folks vigorously defendeing Dean against slurs brought by trolls of your mentality. I also see some folks upset about Lieberman's comments about Dean and other discussions about media coverage. I also see some threads about the trial possibilities, GOP motives, the politics of the situation, and forecasts for future events... much like we have going on here. I also see many more people vowing to contribute more time and money. My favorite post: "Feed the Goal not the Trolls."
Man, if this BBS included fluffergirls with registration, Clutch would need a server the size of Wyoming!
Not true. Let me ammend that message to the troops to honestly reflect the position of your political party as evidenced by the current administration: "I support you 100% until you return home, until you need sustained mental health care, or until you beg for change in rags on a street corner near my home." On topic, the capture of Saddam is wonderful news. While its symbolic power cannot be overstated, it should in no way be seen as a legitimizing event for pre-emptive (sic) war. Again, now that we're there, I want us to finish the job as quickly and humanely as possible. This should truly help, especially if we let Iraqis handle the trial of Saddam. On a related note, I had strong ambivalence to Bush's response. While I greatly approved of his note of humility, his measured response, I continued to be dismayed by the following: "God bless the Iraqi people," or "God bless Iraq." I know he means well, but imagine what that sounds like to a muslim. Imagine someone invading our country, deposing our leader, and declaring "May Allah smile on your homeland," or some such. Shouldn't one of his many advisors/writers be a little more savvy? I suppose it's just a statement for the American audiences anyway.
I think the president had no choice but to lie on the Iraq issue. He certainly can not tell the world that he is using the American military to try and cange the ideologies of the middle east by forcing democracy on them. People were demanding that he say something, but the very thing people were demanding him to say was the one thing he could not say publicly. So if the president lies when he has to, and I think this was one time when he did indeed have to, I really don't appreciate watching half of the people tearing him down for it simply because they don't have the foresight to understand the situation and what is going on for themselves, who are simply repeating blabber that they hear on the news.
My absolute favorite thing I've read so far: "'Why didn't you fight?' one Governing Council member asked Hussein as their meeting ended. Hussein gestured toward the U.S. soldiers guarding him and asked his own question: 'Would you fight them?'" http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A446-2003Dec14.html
You must've been reading a different blog. What about these: * Carrie B: "I can't believe this. I'm crying here. I feel that we now don't have a chance in this election." * Leslie in SF: "I think it is shameful that the ACLU has not commented on the obvious mistreatment Hussein has suffered at the hands of the American military." * Muslims4Dean: "If the Death toll mounts--good. It will teach the American people not to support Nazi Republicans who invase [sic] Muslim lands." * Johnny Smith: "Muslims4Bush [sic]-- don't think we can put it that way. We don't want Americans to die. But if Bush will not bring our boys home--then they're going to have to die so that Howard Dean can win." To paraphrase Hee Haw, sounds like "Gloom, Despair, and Agony, Oh Me!" These people inhabit such a reality distortion field they can't even accept that the capture of a genocidal tyrant is a good thing.
We all just need to ask ourselves: Who would Saddam and Osama vote for if they could vote in the US Presidential elections? The answer is a resounding: HOWARD DEAN Really makes you think, doesn't it......
great. quoting random extreme posts from other websites. Anyone interested in posts from neonazis who support the republican party? anyone interested in posts from fringe evangelicals who think that nuclear war is the way to bring Christ back to earth? I would hope and trust that you're not interested, but these are readily available. I think the discussion of other blogs is troll fodder, fit for the oringinator of the topic only, in terms of our community here.
People, think about it: America's last two years of foreign policy are Osama's wet dream come true. Nobody but Osama knows for sure, but I strongly believe he would vote for Bush every day and twice per day during Ramadan. What he craves is an apocalyptic battle between the extremists of the "west and east." He wants recruits, he wants bloodshed, and he wants anything but anything that can be spun as "America attacks Islam."
just responding to rr's post, that things were pretty calm and reasonable over in dean-land. those posts would seem to say otherwise.
I know, but the problem was anybody letting Jorge convince them to look at other blogs. basso, what do you think of my earlier point concerning "god bless Iraq?" I don't think he should say "Allah," of course, but I'm wondering if theological references should be used at all in this delicate situation. Bush once said something like "Freedom is God's gift to Iraq," and what I heard was an ideal line for an Al-Qaeda recruiting agent. The Western Deity is invading Iraq! It attacks Holy Islam! Blah blah, here's your strap-on bomb belt!
