He certainly has flaws that make him unappealing, but he's a truly interesting candidate in the general election - maybe the single *most* electable of Republicans, for a variety of reasons. He has huge crossover appeal. Whereas generic Dem beats generic Rep by 10-15 points in every poll, Clinton beats Guliani by 2-3%. This is the result of a lot of things: anti-Hillary sentiment amongst moderates and huge appeal of a moderate fiscal conservative by moderates. So many states are won by 2-5% and suddenly, all of those are in play if Guliani runs. If he can win Michigan or Pennsylvania, suddenly that makes it much harder on Clinton. Where he hurts is how many religious-right voters he turns off. But in this scenario, he has two things going for him. First, he's got the "Hillary is the devil" card to play, which really fires up the religious right. Second, those same voters also tend to be strongly focused on the terrorism/patriotism issue, and he can play up 9/11 in that regard. Finally, he can bring in a Huckabee type VP. While that won't excite the base as a VP candidate, it might be enough to get them to come out to vote. I think Guliani is the only of the major Republicans that isn't going to be fighting a massive uphill battle in the general election (assuming things stay similar to where they are not in terms of public opinion, which isn't at all a given).
I have to mostly agree with DM on this one. I find it almost disturbing how often those on the liberal side refer to him dressing as a woman. If he were the typical anti-homosexual repub then I could understand it more (like mocking Foley, Craig, etc) but Rudy? The speech impediment deal I am neutral on, not really cool to make fun of but that happens to every politician ever, so meh. Now by all accounts I've heard Rudy is a douche bag so that one I'm going to have to side with. Not that I wouldn't vote for him, if here were the repub nominee I would have to strongly consider it. ps: I know cross-dressing =/= homosexuality but where you find acceptance of one you often find acceptance of the other.
The scenario might be that Rudy runs against Hillary But conservatives and right wingers might get a third party candidate on the ballot... maybe one who will almost surely take enough away from the repubs to guarantee Hillary the Throne. But even if that doesn't happen I think Diebold is already going Dem this election.
Well, Dems have had to deal with anti-gay rhetoric and actions from Repubs for a long time, which is a big part of this... I don't think it's necessarily aimed at Rudy, but rather he is a tool for pointing out the fact that the Repubs are so desperate they're willing to nominate someone who is antithetical to the "values" they have professed over the last several election cycles. That there are photos of Rudy in drag just makes it much easier. There's also the calculation there that reminding Repub voters of this makes it more difficult for them to solidify their base heading into the general.
The only one I like is Huckabee...that's the only guy I can get behind right now. Guiliani is OK too but the mob will probably take him out before he can get to the White House.
poor guy, he didn't plan this until he got into the middle of the goldbars conspiracy. forget what i said.
While I'm not a fan of Rudy Giuliani, this is a King Kong-sized rationalization for liberals whose supposed philosophy is pretty much "anything goes" as far as sexuality issues. D&D -- Attack the position, not the poster.
Not really. I don't care who Rudy's diddling and I don't care what he thinks about abortion. I find it interesting that those who would care are doing their best not to think about it because he may be their only hope at maintaining power... and I don't mind pointing that out at times. (Note: I didn't say I don't care about abortion... I just don't care about Rudy's view because he a guy who will not be President.)
if you are refering to me, i dont consider myself a liberal and i am actually a registered republican. anyway, in this day and age image counts for alot and it is going to be very easy for his/her opponents to run plenty of nasty adds showing him in all his cute outfits and asking if this is the strong leader we want. that is the kind of stuff that really cuts into his tough-guy-9/11-hero image, imo. once those good old boys, middle-americans and church-goers start seeing those images splashed all over its lights-out for that tranny. this is another reason why he could never be elected. aside from the fact that he is on his 3rd marriage and his children dont speak to him, (which probably says more than anything about what kind of person he is) he is way too much of an authoritarian and after 8 years of bush i think the country will reject that kind of leadership. furthermore, he is going to get swift-boated so hard by the firefighters for his refusal to allow them to continue to recover the remains of their fallen comrades. can you imagine the firefighters that his opponent will be going after to do adds against him?
You are so right on it I need to listen to my own preaching and walk the talk Politics gives me such a stomach ache. I usually don't get involved beyond just voting, but that was before I found this wonderful way to be cynical- hanging out with all my friends in D&D Actually that is my way of saying I don't like any of the candidates except Ron Paul only because he was my wife's gyno and helped us through one birth and two miscarriages. I just love talking politics with Ron Paul because he knows all the candidates personally and he doesn't mind sharing some of the behind the scenes stuff. It's like have a poster who is on the coaches staff posting in the GARM I admit I am fed up with our politcal two party dog and pony show. How's that for the pastor being cynical. I could just say Jesus loves all the candidates
I'm on record of saying I'd take Hillary over Rudy, and only Fred over Hillary.... I also don't get the appeal from conservatives for Rudy...Both Fred and Hillary are much better choices for different reasons...
http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Blogs/News?oid=oid:554823 I'm no fan of Ron Paul, but his local supporters have hit on an ingenious way to welcome Rudy Giuliani to Austin for a fundraiser today: they've recruited local "eccentric" Leslie Cochran to try and meet Giuliani, and urge him to hew to his cross-dressing past: Ron Paul Revolution members have invited Leslie to join a Texas Ron Paul greeting for Rudy Giuliani this Friday evening. “To our knowledge, no candidate has yet reached out to the ‘cross dresser’ vote, and we’re curious to see whether Leslie is convinced that Rudy properly A-dresses this issue”, quipped RPR volunteer Pam Farley. At press release time, no one had yet purchased a Leslie cross-dressing refrigerator magnet for Rudy as a Texas gift. Giuliani, Leslie, and Ron Paul? If this doesn't constitute the perfect storm of nuttiness (Norman Podhoretz in fishnets excepted), what will?
you think dressing like a woman is "fun"? such as... gun control refusal to allow the firefighters to recover the remains of their comrades his 3 marriages (one of which was to his cousin) the fact that his own children dont speak to him his support of amnesty for illegals face it giuliani-supporters - all this tranny has going for him is that he happened to be mayor of nyc on 9/11. his whole campaign is based on reminding us of that as much as possible.
Seriously Rudy's bumper sticker should say "Want war? Vote Giuliani!" Giuliani accuses Hillary and Obama of wanting to invite Bin Laden to their Inauguration The man is unhinged.
