well since these 2 teams are tied for 8th place is the west...i would think whichever player helps their team make the playoffs would get rookie of the year...
Playoffs or not, Yao has the ROY locked up. That's barring Amare averaging 25/10 over the rest of the season.
Unfortunately, League Pass has only had a handful of Bill and Calvin broadcast this year....Although that means, listening to opposing teams broadcasts has given insight on this issue. Correct me if I'm wrong, but every broadcast team says Yao is hands down rookie of the year. They don't make light of Amare, but they always say, Yao has to be the ROY.
even though i think Yao will run away with the award, i wouldnt mind if amare got the ROY as long as the rockets get in the playoffs
Yao's got the award locked up. People can talk all they want about how their stats are similar, but Yao is the go-to guy for the Rockets in the 4th quarter(at least when Rudy is coaching). Stoudemire is the 3rd or 4th option on his team and can't hit a clutch free throw to save his life. The only chance he has to steal ROY is if the Suns make the playoffs, and even then it's a slim chance.
not really. only a couple of times have they actually said yao was definitely rookie of the year. many analysts are divided. i've watched some of phoenix's games against other teams and the opposing team's announcer's often say amare's more impressive or is the rookie of the year. some guys have said yao ming may get all the hype, but amare's the real rookie of the year or whatever. john thompson, former georgetown coach actually said amare's more deserving of the rookie of the year, but yao will get it. i also read an inside hoops rookie of the year prediction which said yao would win it, but said he was no where near amare's level before the all star break. "- Rookie Of The Year Yao Ming will surely win it. He never reached Stoudamire’s level before the All-Star break nor Butler’s consistency through the season. Even Gooden in Orlando will play better. But he will win. " - inside hoops most recent prediction i also read a dallas morning news column today that said when considering who should be rookie of the year, you should remember amare's struggles with his family troubles, and etc. and kobe bryant and stephon marbury both said it wasn't even close. amare's hands down the roy favorite. shaq too said amare was roy and there have been espn analysts like sean elliot who said amare's his pick for roy. and you remember the fools on around the horn who said amare's a better player and yao was not deserving of the award. there's definitely some people who resent yao getting roy for some reason. they're all looking for some excuse not to give him rookie of the year. some people think he's overhyped. but it's not yao's fault; people like playing with his name and calling him dynasty, people made him into this dramatic story of success from bust to rookie all star by doubting him and clowning him on national tv; only to have yao prove the doubters wrong. i believe if barkley and people weren't doubting yao, he wouldn't have gotten this many people interested in him. by making a bet that he would kiss a donkey's a$$ if yao scored 19 points, barkley turned yao into prime time entertainment. people started watching just to see who he would prove wrong next? i know i didn't even pay any attention to yao until barkley opened his loud mouth. first game i actually watched of yao was against shawn bradley and we all know how that turned out. 30 points 16 rebounds.
Yao's nearly locked it up by most recent accounts in informal polls, statements by sportswriters, as well as general performance. The 'worse' that could happen is co-RoY with Amare. If Amare is sole RoY, it'll be a pretty big surprise.
Spiral, many of the things those players said was about Yao and Amare's performance was before the All Star Break. Their play before was very even, but since than, Yao has pulled away and I believe he rightly deserve his own ROY if the season ended today. -G'day-
Lately most of the annoucers when commenting on ROY say that Yao has it locked. Honestly I haven't even heard Amare's name mentioned in any of the games the Rockets have been playing in or any others except only in games were PHX is playing, but even then Yao is mentioned as the leading candidate. I hear more about Amare for ROY from BBSes than I do from the press. I think fans are making it seem closer than it really is.
all Amare can do is D.U.N.K...the only reason caron butler is leading in scoring cuz the HEAT got NO body to go to..that's why they still suck...i like what a commentator on espn said "Yao should be the Rookie of the Year..people talked about how difficult Amare life is growing up..but he doesn't have to go through the things that Yao have to go through..you're talking about coming to a different country, a whole different culture, and he have to adjust to the way the NBA play....not only that..Yao was criticized and people make jokes at him cuz he's the number one pick and he's from china and he slap them in the face because he proved them wrong....."

Very well said
Know what really pissed me off? On the Wizards/Suns ESPN broadcast last night, Mike Tirico asked Tom Tolbert who was the rookie of the year. Tolbert goes, "Oh, I definitely think it's Amare. To come from high school and make such an impact..." and the prick goes on, raving about how Stoudemire works on the offensive and defensive end, and how he changes the game. Please. Stoudemire had absolutely no part in the Suns running out to their big lead. He came in when his team was up by 25. And know what? He scored all his points in garbage time. He ended up with 17, sending Tolbert into an ass-kissing seizure. Meanwhile, Yao is leading his team to an important win on the road, points that make-or-break the season. Usually if the Rockets are playing in a one-sided affair, Yao is on the bench. Stoud, however, is in the game abusing the scrubs. That is what makes me mad about analysts who feel Amare's the ROY. One freak game against KG has everybody wearing Stoudemire-colored glasses. They obviously don't watch Rocket games.
What has Amare done to get the ROY away from Yao? Yao is cluth in the cluth time of the game. Yao has all around skills compare to Amare's no skill. Yao face more pressure then anyone in NBA. Yao has done better then Amare this season. Amare has no chance for ROY. Yao is Rookie of the Year
TOM TOLBERT. He makes me sick. Back then in June during the draft. I didn't know how Yao would be like. But he was saying all this crap......OHHHHHHH SO MYSTERIOUS. From China. Oh. He's gonna be like Shawn Bradley! Well he didn't exactly say that but he wasn't supportive. He was saying, "THE ROCKETS WILL REGRET NOT PICKING JAY WILLIAMS." Oh please.....forget him. Bill Walton is better than him!!!
I saw the game last night and too heard those comments. Tirico asked Tolbert about ROY and he said he liked Amare because he does it both offensively and defensively and is the only inside presence the Suns have. Plus how hard it was for him to come out of HS. Tolbert then paused and thought about what he said and then agreed that Yao was also the Rockets only inside presence but seemed to think because of Yao's international experience (as a plus) that Amare's road to greatness was tougher. I don't think that was the consensus coming into this season. Most people believed that the CHINA international competition was weaker than any US competition. It might have been different if Yao was playing in Europe like Gasol but International experience is different in Europe and China. There is a HUGE gap there. Tolbert totally forgets the fact that Yao is coming from a totally different world culture over here in the US, knows marginal english and is supporting the weight of an entire country on his shoulders. Additionally Yao had NO training camp or summer league camp like Amare did to adjust to the players, the league etc. Also Yao has been playing non stop B-ball for a few years now. When has he had any time to rest? Yet he keeps going! Bottom line, any talking head can SPIN their ROY candidate any way they want to but please get the facts straight. When Tolber started stating his case for Amare he talked him up pretty good but as he stated the cases he never could really find a way that put Amare over the top over Yao. In fairness, he did say that Yao winning it would not surprise him and that he would have no problem with it. I guess it is his personal "preference" that Amare has done more. Earlier in the year I was pretty impressed with Amare's game but the last two months he has really tailed off as teams have found out how to defense him. Conversely Yao has gotten better and down the stretch of games it is YAO on the Rockets that is being asked to make big shots where as in Phoenix Amare is the 3rd option behind TWO allstars. I think Yao shoulders more responsibility and has shown me more this year over Amare. They are both fine players. Yao will win the award, either by himself or they will share it.
I think coming straight from high school to the NBA is really tough. And Amare has been the most successful in his first season.....has done better than any of the other players who came out of high school in his first season. BUT YAO. Golly. He came from China. That is like 13 hours away. It's a totally different language. It's a totally different culture. Yao has had to deal with all this media. Yao has had to adjust without going to training camp. I think it's been much tougher for Yao. AND Yao has better statistics than Amare right now.
only recently have people actually said yao ming is the definite rookie of the year. only in the last two games, have opposing announcers said that. that's cause yao made it obvious with his performance against the suns that clinched the tie-breaker. before practically everybody was sucking up to amare cause he dunked on yao. but even after yao proved himself and helped clinch the tiebreaker against the suns, there are still some people who believe amare's the real rookie of the year and yao is undeserving.
