I need networking help. My goal is to have a PC setup with Orb so I can watch TV wherever I go. The problem I have is a weak router.

So I decided to buy a 2nd router. But I would like to configure it as an access point or have it bridged with the original router so the PC can have get a good WiFi signal and there won't be any lag in the network. Or can I get the 2nd router to join onto the wireless network and then have the 2nd router broadcast out it's signal? What's the best way to do it?

And once I get the PC up with Orb on it, what's the best TV tuner card (on the cheap) I can use with the PC? If I'm out of town, I would like to go through Orb and watch my Rockets/Texans.

Where is your PC located, and where is the router? Distance, walls, etc?

What type of network card do you have in the PC? (b,g,n)

What type of router do you have now?

I can't help you with the tv capture card. That's not my bag.

Your fastest transfer speed is as fast as your lowest connection/peripheral/router. Adding another router that's faster won't make the first one faster. Did I read that right?

    He means something like this:

You want the second router to extend the range of the one that's functioning as the internet gateway so you need the router to 1) connect to the wireless network of the first one and 2) host a wireless network other devices can connect to.

Not sure if there are routers that can do that by themselves.

You have a weak router so you bought a second router? Is the second router stronger than the other one? Can it do the job as the primary (or sole) router?

My router distributes Wi-Fi to my computer, my wife's computer, my Roku box, my iPad, and 'guest' computers across a 2800+ square foot home with two stories with no problems so one good router should be able to do the trick.

    Check out Netgear 3500L
    http://netgear.com/products/home/wirelessouters/work-and-play/WNR3500L.aspx
Its a pretty good (and cheap) Gigabit Wireless N router.
It is also open source so if you are not happy with the Netgear firmware you can load others.
It also has WDS which is what you are asking about. If you get 2 of these you can have them connect wirelessly to act as access point and extend your wifi range.

This is what I want to do. I'm in Austin and I have setup a PC in Houston at my parents place running Orb. I'm going to hook it up to my parents' TV with a TV Tuner card.

Where the TV is located, there is no place to setup a router. The 1st router is in another room and it has a weak signal. I was going to setup a 2nd router, which can connect wireless to the 1st and then host as a wireless network to the PC. Is it possible? Or is there another way of doing this?

If you are using Cable, you don't need to do that, just put a TV tuner card in the PC and split the line before it gets to the modem...take one into the PC/TV and one into the modem.

Then you can get remote access into the PC and watch it on your PC in Austin......much simpler setup, IMO.

    DD,

I was planning to use a splitter from my parents' Dish receiver and put it to TV Tuner card.

The remote access, I won't get any sound. I figured through Orb, I can do that. And doesn't Orb have a link or I can click on something within a program to bring up the channel?

    Dude, I'm sorry....hehe. I figured I would follow the original. ;)

You could buy an Apple Airport Express and plug it in near the PC. It will pick up the wireless signal from your router and you can use an ethernet cable to connect to the PC (or whatever device you need to connect). I have done this with my Dish box as well as my Slinbox that don't have wireless connections. Pretty simple to set up for Mac or Windows.

I used a Hava (which is like a slingbox) for a while, now with NBA League pass and all the TV shows you want online there is no need for it.

I would probably just give it to you if you would pay the shipping, if you want to stream TV to your college location etc.

    Here you go.

DD, that would be freaking awesome if you could do that. Is it easy to setup? E-mail me and we'll talk.

Yeah, its a pretty awesome router.
I really like the USB port. I connected an external HD to it and all the computers map to it without any issues.
Originally I chose this Netgear WNR3500 because it comes with the Live Parental Controls ... powered by OpenDNS ... which is pretty cool too if you have kids.

Orb is nice. But having to have that PC running all the time is what made me get a slingbox. Been sending a sling single to my family in Saudi for years. Just upgraded to an HD slingbox for my direct tv connection.
