he's not having a very good season if you look at his offensive numbers. not even scoring double digits, and shooting just 38% from the field. however, lets look at what this team needs in a PG or backup PG. someone who can lead this offense. head, lucas, and vspan dont have the PG skills or instincts to lead the offense. every time one of them is asked to run the point, our offense becomes stagnant and has a hard time finding open shots. someone who can nail down open 3's. he shoots 38% from the floor, but he also has a 41% 3pt percentage while shooting a good amount of 3 pointers. our PG's arent asked to score or shoot much, so his low FG percentage is not that big of a deal. the only thing JVG's PGs are asked to do is lead the offense and nail down the open 3. he's also a good at converting from the free throw line when he gets fouled on drives to the lane 90%. so while he may not be a flashy guy with athleticism out the yang like crittenton or collison, he's a solid guy who can lead an offense and would fit well with this team in my opinion.
talent wise, yes. but its not about which player is better, its about which player better fits this team. we dont need an offensive minded shoot first PG on this team. does anybody get that? we had that in steve francis.
You act like Ronald Steele is the only pass first PG going to the NBA. They can also get a proven vet through the F-Agency. I'm sure the guy is worth looking at, but unless this guy has a huge upside, he's probably not worth taking in the first round. If he's averaging 9 pts 4 assists in college, why do you think he could do that in the pros? Plus, the 3pt line is shorter, so his 3pt. percentage is skewed. I like the idea, but why draft a guy that you could just sign to the practice squad when the draft is over?
coming into the season, he was a mid 1st rounder. his stock has dropped a bit, but he's still a high 2nd rounder in most mocks. you also forget that we're in the bottom of the 1st round, and the PG class this year is very weak. im not saying hes the answer, im just saying he's probably the best fit as the primary backup PG for this team through the draft...cuz you know...this is the draft forum...not the F-Agency forum. the only other PG's who are expected to declare are Law, Shakur, and Dom James. Law and James wont make for pure PG's, and Shakur's PG play has been inconsistent over his entire career. so if you wanna go for the flashy pick, then no, steele is not for you. but you've seen how crappy our team is without a floor general and i think steele could help us in that area more than the other PG's.
I'm not saying I think we should take him, but this is your best argument so far. However, it's still the middle of the season, we're going to make the playoffs, there is really no reason to make a decision now and Ronald is an average player in college. It's hard to make a case this early for a guy that is posting these numbers: 9/4. The skills he has scares no one.
Ronald Steele is a junior; he's repeatedly stated his intention of staying 4 years. He's been playing injured all season (knee tendinitis). When healthy Steele might be the best pure PG in college.
