The Rockets just signed Axel Dench (ROY for Aussie NBL) to play in the Summer Leagues.

    http://www.nbl.com.au/news_story/0,2327,2327966,00.html

    ---------------------------------------------

A GREAT year could get even better for Wollongong rookie Axel Dench after he was snapped up today by Houston for an NBA summer league tournament in the United States.

Dench, 25, the reigning NBL Rookie of the Year, will cap a memorable 12 months by vying for an NBA contract at the 10-team, 10-day tournament starting in Salt Lake City on July 20 (AEST).
The 211cm centre, who helped Wollongong win its maiden NBL title this year, will line up in a 12-strong Rockets roster against the likes of Chicago's 2001 NBA draft picks Tyson Chandler (No.2 overall) and Eddy Curry (No.4) and Toronto's first round pick Michael Bradley.

Houston will also use the tournament to unveil its draft picks Eddie Griffin and Terence Morris.

The other NBA teams participating are the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers and Utah Jazz.

Elsewhere, Sydney Kings forward Matt Nielsen today left for the US to chime into the San Antonio Spurs' summer league campaign starting in Boston next week.

Nielsen, a Boomers squad member for September's Goodwill Games in Brisbane, and Kings teammate James Smith will suit up for the Spurs in the 10-team, week-long exhibition series.

The Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Seattle SuperSonics and the Washington Wizards are the other teams.

Nielsen, who also attended an NBA pre-draft camp in Chicago last year, turned heads after helping Sydney break into the NBL finals for the first time in five seasons and played in Australia's East Asian Games campaign this year.

Being a Wollongong must be wonderful, but to be the very best of 'em calls for a celebration. Let's have some beers and bloomin onions mate.

Dench played in last years Rocky Mountain Revue for the Rockets as well... He did fairly well, so it's worth giving him another look since it doesn't cost them anything, but I wouldn't think anything of it...

Hopefully Axel Rose, will have an incredible preseason game/summer league game, possibly get 6-7 blocks, a dozen points, double figure boards..... the Rockets will notice it. And then rush his agent into the negotiating room, until he signs a 6-7 year, 40+ million dollar contract...... Because I really would hate for the Rockets,to possibly lose the chance at him signing elsewhere.

Imagine if we did not lock Cato up, after that great preseason game he had. It would be a terrible situation for the Rockets, they would have extra cap room this year, which would not be good. And quite possibly wouldn't have the ability to use him as great trade bait, this offseason.

So, I am pulling for Mr. Axel, to light up Miles and the gang tonight, then check back at clutchcity to see the front page:

    ROCKETS LOCK UP AXEL!!!!

I didn't keep with Axel Dench as much as I should have. Does anybody have any info on him, height, weight, position he mostly plays? He would be a nice acquisition if he's as good as advertised! [IMG]

I think Axel could end up having a Marc-Jackon-like season if he keeps on hitting that nifty jumper of his.

I live pretty close to spokane washington, thats were Gonzaga is. Dench is actually pretty slow and really did not come on until the end of his senior season. gonzaga has a good program though that really hammers home the fundamentals, they have to becasue they dont have the talent base as some of these schools like a florida or UCLA. Alex is about 6 11 and 260 he was a good rebounder and shotblocker but his o is really lacking, well the last time I saw him play it was lacking, but he works hard and could be a good backup but there is no way he could be a starter.

OK, I remember Dench at Gonzaga now! He is really fundamentally sound from the 4 or 5 games I saw of him. He would be a nice addition if his offense has come around! Thanks for the info IVFL and getsmartnow!

I am always interested in foregn players. Do they actually hit the weights down under. It still blows my mind that most European coaches discourage weight training.
