I have many friends who live in the Bay area and are GS/Sac fans. Every time I talk to the GS fans, I can't believe how bitter they are on the fact they didn't land Yao Ming in the 2002 draft. That, plus the fact that Mike Dunleavy (the next Larry Bird) has failed miserably to measure up to his #3 pick status, have been haunting the fan base of that franchise for two straight years now. If you go to their fan forum, you can see in every 2 pages, there is a thread talking about either "It sucks we don't have Yao" and "Strategies on landing Yao" kinds of topics.

I am not writing this thread trying to feel good by pitying over another Franchise. I just think we really need to realize how lucky we are for landing that #1 pick and having this tall Chinese in our lineup.

Think about it, both of the Warriors and the Rockets were in similar shapes, with alot of potentials, dreams and hopes, but weren't realizing them. The Warriors were tied with the Bulls(or the Grizzlies, I can't remember) for the worst record for that year. Who got the #1 pick? Us!

In 2001, 2003 and 2004, the team with the worst record all landed the #1 pick of that year. Only in 2002, the Warriors had to settle with #3, and we got #1 and picked Yao.

Now, two years later, we are in the playoffs, got McGrady (who came mainly because of Yao Ming) and will be considered a contender for years to come.

The Warriors? They were in the lottery again. No one picks them to do anything next year, and the year after that, and the year after that. They are still dreaming that Dunleavy could be the next Bird, Richardson/Pietrus could be the next Jordan, and Biedrins could be the next Dirk, and most importantly, Yao Ming could be in the Warriors' uniform one day.

This year, they just signed Foyle (3.1 ppg and 3.8 rpg) for a huge contract, and that really aggrevates the Warriors fans. It is extremely painful to know that they could have Yao Ming, but now they are locked with Foyle for five more years.

By pure luck, and nothing else, we are who we are(a contender and one of the hottest teams in the league) today, and they are who they are(a perennial lock in the lottery) today. Guys, feel fortunate and when next year, you see Yao made a layup instead of a monster jam, before you complain, just think about the Warriors.

How many coaches in Houston vs GS in the last how many years? What about the ownership direction? Quality of basketball people.

GS has been a disaster. Maybe Mullin can fix it all. Who is coaching them next season?

I always love these cities that pin their silly "hopes" of landing Yao on "We've got a big Asian population!" Well, regardless of the fact that Houston has a sizable Chinatown itself, it's not like Yao can just go out for a slice of pizza or egg drop soup or something. The guy's an unmistakable celebrity that gets mobbed wherever he goes! Why would he care about the Asian (as opposed to Chinese?) population of a city he spends a few months a year in? When would he get to interact with said population? And how?! He's a Chinese sports icon!

no they could not have gotten Yao Ming with the 3rd pick, if we didn't get him at #1 then Chicago would have taken him #2

He is as untouchable as Kobe Bryant himself. He wouldn't be moved for anything less than Garnett or Duncan, and Yao will make more $$$$ in Houston. Why would Yao leave Huston anyways? I would think that he would be VERY loyal to his team, and keep building with them, especially with the big bucks.

All this "still on target for Yao" nonsense, is just that, nonsense. We need to get real, and pursue actual possible additions to our team.
