Yeah, pretty much that. He was a young genius who was literally destroyed mentally by CIA MKUltra BS that led to unhinged behavior, but was he really all that wrong about the things he was against? Disagree with his methods all you want, and I do, but his cause was a good one. When you take one of the most intelligent people on the planet and intentionally strip away their socialization, as part of a twisted government experiment, that's exactly what you get.
