    Well that is one less dominant pitcher potentially on the market this summer. However it could trigger a fire sale in Miami.

    Fernandez has been criminally underrated.

    His career era in 4 years was 2.50.... FIP 2.40
    This year his FIP was the lowest in baseball at 2.20
    This year he had nearly 260 K's in 180 innings.

    All by the age of 24.... and he never got the big contract to take care of his family.

    I have never met Jose Fernandez, other than following him as an amateur and in the MLB I know nothing about him as a person. I wish nothing but the best for his family and have no ill will for anyone that is impacted by his loss.

    Having said that, it is posted in the Astros forum. It impacts the Astros.

    Looks like about 650 boat related deaths each year. Most related to alcohol. 71% drown. And 84% not wearing a life jacket.

    I reckon I feel pretty safe on a boat so I would likely not be wearing a jacket, and don't think I ever have, and certainly not thinking that we would hit a rock, and even if, figure we'd be going slow enough I would hit the water safely in the event or could jump to water. Probably all mistakes in thought and having too much trust in my boat operators.

    It somehow sucks even more because he was a Cuban who made it big in Miami at a very young age. Culturally, it's hard to explain how important that is in South Florida. The community will go into a deep mourning over this one.

    Until today, I had never heard his story about 4 defection attempts, jail time, being shot at, etc. Crazy, sad story.

    Yeah, it's pretty amazing. Somebody could make an incredible documentary about his tragically short life. It totally explains his happy demeanor and attitude: after everything he went through, baseball and life in the States was pretty much gravy.

    This passing seems unprecedented in MLB. Adenhart passed a couple years ago, but I can't recall the last superstar to die so young. Len Bias is the only other one that rings a bell. Sean Taylor too. Can't think of any star baseball players.

    Very sad day for all baseball fans. Jose was a joy to watch.

    Probably before our time, but Lyman Bostock looked like a star in the making before he was shot to death in 1978.
