And I am saying you are totally incorrect, and your lies (or ignorance) devalues what he actually achieved. You are inciting an argument that does nothing but provide a disservice to his legacy.

It's no less accurate than black or colored. And everyone knows you're gonna call us something.

oh please sir, please tell us what the accurate description would be? Im not anglo-american. Im not euro-american. To be quite honest, I can't trace my heritage beyond a couple generations. If you can't trace your heritage back to what you're calling yourself, then you have no business referring to yourself to that heritage. But you're right, everyone knows they are going to call you [us] something .... great way to subtly pull the victim card.

Im going to go the atheist route ... please refer me to an amoeba-american.

Great way to pull the denial card. You complain about the term African-American as inaccurate or stupid but offer no equally accurate alternative. Even though my father is from Cameroon and my mother is from Haiti, I could be an orphan and everyone, including you, would know where the heck my ancestors came from. You could probably look at my great-great grandkids and still know.

Looking at you would not be able to find out if you were african-american. I doubt 95% of people could say for sure you were not 100% Haitian and no one could tell that you are american.

How would you describe your race if you had moved to France instead?

I agree black and colored are also inaccurate but not as specifically inaccurate. AA really defines a specific group of people to me, not a race.

Like I said before, I am on no crusade to change it. It will die it's own death if history has any say. But in the mean time pointing out how crazy it is should not be considered racist. Although as this thread shows any questioning of the logic finds sharp response.

You would know that my ancestors came from Africa. It would be exceedingly simple for you to deduce my American nationality. Africa is the continent from which Black Haitians and all other Black West-Indians were transported; no black Haitian or West Indian would deny or dispute an African ancestry.

The term black would apply then. I never stated that African-American replaced it; it's just no less "idiotic" while we're in America, talking about a group of people who mostly Americans.

A "race" is a group of people. You just don't like the term regardless of how it's used. For all intents and purposes AA is used to define a race of people who live in a particular country.

If so, it will be complemented by another term about which you'll complain about just as vociferously. You still haven't effectively demonstrated the "craziness" of referring to a group of Americans who clearly descended from Africa as African-Americans. And I never used the term racist.

well like most other arguments in here, this has broken down into you being pissed and not reading what I actually write, but just making your own little conclusions.

    Later.

    Ouch. :)

The radi of the "right" is definitely the voice of frustration at this point. I can't fault listeners for being nuts at times, too. When you have Rush as a keynote speaker, there are definitely problems in your party.

sorry but you are wrong about this. Apparently I'm not the one ignorant of Latimer's accomplishments.

So before you start accusing others of lies(ignorance) you might want to do some research.

Yet we do use Irish-American or Polish-American and things like that. I guess we could use Nigerian-American and things like that, but that would be a bit unwieldy, and I suspect given the history of slavery in this country and the fact that African countries keep changing on a regular basis, there may not even be a solid way to say what specific country many people were originally from (unlike, say, Europeans or Asians).

I think I made a pretty decent effort to rebut every one of your assertions in the last post. But later to you too.

Your arguments are well thought out but when I try to reply you make huge leaps of what I am saying or of my "real" feelings like I am a racist. It just isn't fun to argue with someone who does that.

That was prompted by suggesting her preference for being considered African rather than American; she was not ORDERING her back...

If some guy from New York moved to Houston and just complained about things Texan most would think if not say "Just go back then."

I don't see why this kind of incident gets automatically turned into an issue or racism... except that it serves a purpose to do so.

That doesn't say he invented the telephone.

I've not seen one thing that said he invented it, just that he worked with Bell.

    From the exact same site:
