Farmar Crittenton Vujacic Kobe Evans Karl Walton Yue Odom Radmanovic Cook Turiaf Kwame Bynum Recent signings: Coby Karl & Luke Walton. In short Lakers need a proven starting vet PG. Heading into a new season with Farmar as their starting PG isn't ideal for them or any other team unless they're the opposition. Crittenton is meant to be a project but might find himself more at his natural SG position. Vujacic is a bust. While Yue was touted as a PG but he's a second round pick and I get the feeling he was more of a safety net pick, ie gamble/replacement in case they lost Walton in free agency. http://www.pe.com/sports/breakout/stories/PE_Sports_Local_D_lakers02.3e4273b.html Since Cook is BYC he's hard to trade for and only a few scenarios work Head+Snyder for Cook+Turiaf. With McGrady & Bonzi's questionable health issues this proposal absolutely kills the Rockets in depth at SG. -or- Alston+Lucas for Cook+Turiaf. -or- Alston+Novak for Cook+Turiaf. Cook & Turiaf play inconsequential minutes for the Lakers since Odom and Radmanovic take the majority of minutes at PF. In the deals involving Alston they get a starter in exchange for a couple of bit pieces though on the Rockets those bit pieces would have greater roles. <table border="1"><tr> <td>Alston Farmar Vujacic Kobe Evans Crittenton Karl Walton Yue (MLE) Odom Radmanovic Novak Kwame Bynum <td>James Spanoulis Brooks Lucas Sura McGrady Bonzi Head Battier Snyder Reed Hayes Cook Turiaf Landry Yao Deke </tr></table> After that packaging Snyder+Sura+Lucas could possibly snare a 3/4 type player over $6M.
Hmm... If the Lakers keep Kobe and can't land Williams, Atkins, Francis, etc... Then Alston does seem like a player they would look into. Probably going to have to wait until mid-season to make it worth our while though. I can foresee them contemplating a Radmanovic 4 Alston straight up deal. Personally I am not interested in any of the Lakers available post players. But there is no denying our glut.
I only considered doing the Cook/Head trade if we were swapping picks, and Crittendon was still on the board, which he was. I assume LA wanted him too, or that trade might have happened. I'd still do the trade of Head/Brooks for Cook/Crittendon, but I think Adelman was the one who really wanted Brooks. Who knows. But, I wouldn't do a straight up trade of Head for Brooks ... not equal trade, IMHO.
I doubt the lakers would be willing to part with turiaf. he's still on his rookie contract and the organization thinks highly of him. so adding him as basically a throw in to this deal seems highly unlikely Cook has never really done it for me. I would rather see what Landry has to offer and give Novak spot minutes at the 4 than guarantee anything to cook, who is a chronic underachiever. you also have to take into account that if we are still (hopefully) planning on acquiring a PF whether it be through trade or FA...that player will basically receive starters minutes coming in.. so thats even less minutes to go around. This trade puts us in the land of actually being overstocked at the PF position, which isn't necessarilly a bad thing, but I think we can do better than cook. I also have a hard time getting over the gag reflex that accompanies any trade idea which actually benefits the lakers. offering them our starter pg from last year actually benefits them by not forcing them to overpay for a marginal pg talent this offseason, further miring them in cap hell. screw those yellow bastards...
another benefit of a trade is they save their mle. they need to adds a capable swingman to play minutes behind kobe and walton.
Crittenton is not a natural two. He may have played there initially in high school, but the guy is a prototypical one. He has with great floor vision, handle, and passing skills. He can create off the dribble for himself or for others. The biggest weakness in his game is having not outside shot, which itself may make Head more valuable to them. But I still don't see how gaining Cook benefits us that much. And I highly doubt the Lakers empty all of their frontcourt reserves for Head.
The trade involving Head doesn't reall benefit both teams. i just included it as it was a trade that worked involving Cook. Rafer + Novak for Cook + Turiaf would be the most likely scenario. Lakers aren't emptying their frontcourt reserves they'd be trading their third option PF & C for a starting PG and third option PF.
The Lakers will probably sign Derek Fisher and that will reduce their need for a veteran PG. It's less likely we do a deal with them.
I don't think you'll see Derek Fisher in the NBA again. He got out of his contract with Utah to take care of his daughter. I don't think he was pulling a Carlos Boozer - just lying to get out of your contract and resigning elsewhere. Derek won't be signing with anyone anytime soon.
Cook would be a decent compliment to our frontline. Alternative type of PF to Hayes and Landry, and also can play the 3rd center role like Howard did last year. Cook + Vujacic or Evans for Rafer + JL3 or Head + VS or Snyder for Cook + Lakers 08 1st rounder (or possibly their Bobcats 2nd rounder) Seems to be reasonable for both teams.
no to cook or sasha they are just plain terrible i dont think the lakers could give them away if they wanted to
The only team with a worse starting PG was the Lakers. That being said, Alston is ten times better than any PG they have had since Fisher.
i would do it if we could get Turiaf too...i don't see the point of doing a Cook for Head straight up....if we can give up Head and Lucas for Cook and Turiaf then hell yeah...
I don't want to give up Luther for Cook. I was just considering it to move up in the draft. Straight up? No way. I'd prefer to shop Luther around a little harder than that.
Think we could somehow package Vspan or our new pick for Cook in some kind of deal? Head and Alston are both much much better than Cook IMO. Perhaps something like Vspan/Snyder for Cook/filler. LA can't think they are getting a starter quality player for that guy. His averages are inflated because of the injuries to the front court.
