I'm in the process of purchasing a backup generator for my house and would like some advice from anyone here who's purchased and installed one before. I'm specifically looking at a Generac Guardian 14kW emergency generator and getting it hooked up to my natural gas line. I don't need to power the entire house; just the major items such as the fridge and maybe tv and computer. I think the 14kW unit should be able to power my 4-ton central air unit but not definitely for sure yet.

I found an online retailer that can deliver this unit for about $3,200 and now I just need to find an installer and figure out what I need to do/setup with Centerpoint (gas company) and/or Reliant (electric company). Do I also need to get a permit for this (City of Pearland)? Any advice or recommendations is greatly appreciated!
