OK, I was watching the movie "Blue Chips" earlier today and a part of the movie I saw made me think. Whenever the coach (Nikc Nolte) is visiting Ricky Roe's family, Ricky's dad and the coach are outside and they are having a discussion. They were talking about religion and I believe this is how it went: Coach: I was raised Baptist Father: Was that Southern Baptist or Missionary Baptist Coach Why Missionary of course Father: Good. We don't think to kindly of Southern Baptists around here if you know what I mean. Now I may have the religion wrong but they said something about two sectors of the same religion and one sector of that religion thinking they were better than the other. My question is this, why is it that some religions cannot get along especially when they are both the same religion? I'm not a very big religion person but this is puzzling to me. Also what religious factions are there that don't get along with another? If you know could you please name them and why they don't get along? I have listed the ones I believe do not get along. If these are incorrect please inform me and if they are correct please explain why they do not get along. Catholics and Protestants Jews and Muslims Southern Baptists and Missionary Baptiists????????????
I was told by a Muslim that a long time ago (apparently > 1000 years ago) Arabs were 'taken advantage' of by the wealthier Jews. Apparently the Arabs were dirt poor and were given money, at interest, by the Jews. Apparently people hold really long grudges. Oh yeah, and in the early 20th century, the Jews were being murdered all over Europe. The British, looking for power in the region, backed Zionism by putting the Jews in Palestine. It would have been a great idea... if people weren't already there. Catholics and Protestants? See edit: oops, indulgences.
Ha ha ha If I was in school then yeah I would but no I do not need help on an essay or any other type of project. It has really just been in my mind since seeing that part of the movie today and I just wanted to get some answers.
To no one’s surprise I’m sure, I’ll chime in on this one. This is my take on these questions. Now I may have the religion wrong but they said something about two sectors of the same religion and one sector of that religion thinking they were better than the other. My question is this, why is it that some religions cannot get along especially when they are both the same religion? The first distinction to make is between faith and religion. Faith ought to be the focal point of religious organisations, but all too often it isn’t. I should qualify that I’m talking about the Christian faith and Christian churches here. No matter what the churches do, the essence of the Christian faith is the relationship between the individual and God. That’s what counts. Ideally, churches are supportive groups where people gather together to share their faith and support and strengthen each other. Christians are humans and by no means perfect, however, so before long problems started with these groups. Some people focused on one area and others focused on another. This is not a bad thing in itself, but rivalries and disputes broke out, and as these groups got larger and more organised they became power structures and more bureaucratic and many, at least at the top, became very corrupted. It was in response to some very dramatic corruption in the Catholic Church that Martin Luther protested, thus eventually spawning another group of churches called Protestant Churches. Many of these quickly embarked on their own paths to corruption. So fast forward 500 years and we have a situation where some parts of some churches have become essentially political organisation and have very little or no genuine faith left in them. When you hear about Catholics and Protestants killing each other in Northern Ireland, for example, that is all about politics and has nothing to do with genuine Christian faith. It is almost completely the opposite, in fact. (I should also point out that many churches have also gone through periods of renewal where they have moved towards recentring themselves on the faith. So it’s not all bad news and it’s not all one way, down hill, for all churches. ) I'm not a very big religion person but this is puzzling to me. Don’t worry about that. It puzzles me too. There is a long history of conflict between Catholics and various Protestants groups and between Protestant Groups. I didn’t go to church much as a kid so I’m not really schooled in the rivalry. Others here will be able to give you much better information about this that I can, and likewise on the whole Baptist fragmentation, which I know very little about. The difference between Jews Muslims and Christians is also a long and interesting story, but one I’m going to have to get back to. I’ll post on this later, but anyone else who wants to chime in, please feel free.
Are you talking about sects within a religion that dont get along or entire religions that dont get along with each other? ****es and Sunni Muslims dont get along with each other. There are four main classes in Hinduism that dont sometimes get along.
All have sinned. There is no one perfect other than Jesus Christ. It all starts with this solid foundation, and remaining on that foundation.
He's not bashing the religion. If he's bashing anything, it's the practice of using a public venue to issue a statement of faith disguised as a statement of fact.
