Somebody can be the most qualified person to be/run for president, but it seems that if you dont say "Jesus Christ is my lord and savior," you dont have a shot at becoming the nominee for president for the republican party...which i think is sad... but i guess things are changing, and some people no longer think religion has no place in government...so what do you think. should religion and government mix?
I think for most people its hard to seperate their faith from politics. If someone truely believes that homosexuality is wrong and they are in a leadership role to where they can regulate it, well they will. I understand the point of not forcing your opinions on other people but that only goes so far. Other peoples opinions are forced on us all the time. I think its near impossible to seperate the two. Everyone has a "religion" Even if that "religion" is no "religion", its what most people base their politcal stance on anywas.
No, keep all religious people out of government. Signed, And Seriously, though, a person's religion, whether it be Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Humanism, Socialism, et. al. will affect how they vote and how they rule. No amount of crying about it will change that.
i fully support the complete separation of state and church. give you an example, chinese imperial familes had always been the absolute power in both state and church. when the imperial family falls, both the state power and religious power crumble. where there is a separation between the two, if one of the two falls, the other one does not have to fall. thus preserve some sort of continuity. think about the vaticans, if the pope rules all of the christianity based countries politically, and for whatever reason, the vatican falls, then everything is done.
lol the vatican isnt gonna fall. It would be hard for any faith to fall. But I think I understand your point. I would tend to argue that side not in fear of one of them falling but maybe from corruption instead.
hehe, you get my point corruption leads to down fall and i think eventually everything will fall... just the nature of the world, granted, it'll take a long time for certains things than others hehe
If corruption could lead to the downfall of the Vatican, it would have done it 800 years ago. Any corruption in the Catholic Church today is minor compared to the Middle Ages.
well, i'm just using it as an example. don't get too worked up besides, no one knows the future... what if aliens came to earth and zapped half of the world
This poll is dumb ... You are talking about politicians being forced to hide their faith and their beliefs because you don't like that their beliefs are based on faith. They are not saying that everyone should be Christian or whatever. You seriously don't understand what separation of church and state is or you wouldn't ask that question in a poll. Everyone's beliefs are based on something, whether it is their upbringing, where they are from, or their religion. For most, you can't talk about what you believe and why you believe it without bringing up your religion. So are you trying to say that anyone who is religious should not be allowed to run for political office? I agree that brining up religion for the purpose of trying to get votes is dumb and is probably done all the time (not just by Republicans like you seem to think). Politicians will do or say anything that will help them get elected even if it is lying straight thru their teeth whether it is about Religion or anything else. Like it or not ... That politics man.
well i mean the stuff that comes up in the republican debate....."jesus christ is my savior".....is that necessary or does it have no place? back in the day, you'd never hear stuff like that
And no. It's not hiding their beliefs. You can be a proud christian, buudhist, hindu, muslim, or anythign for that matter.... i can respect somebody who is proud of their religion. is it necessary in government? does it have to be brouhgt up in debates??? back in the day did religion play a huge role in politics. sure it did. but how often was it brought up?
and look at old tapes of FDR. JFK. Nixon. etc.... how often was jesus christ mentioned back then. im saying its a different time now. religon and politics are clearly together. For example, gay marriage and stem cell research....stem cell research???? that does nothing but good. religion shot it down though.
In the US, it seems like a presidential candidate needs to have a religion, whatever it is, to be even considered running for president, and then he/she will need to talk about it a lot. In Western Europe, it's almost the opposite. People will try to stay away from religious candidates, they would be worried if a candidate starts talking about religion, since religion and state are supposed to be separated. A religious person could still be elected in Europe, as long as he keeps his religion for himself and doesn't bring it up on any political issue.
Personally, I don't think I want a leader that doesn't believe in a higher power. I believe in moral absolutes that are determined by God. I don't want someone to decide that people would be better off if we killed off all of the poor (extreme example for the purpose of illustration). That doesn't mean that I want a government based entirely on laws derived from religious texts, as I don't have faith that the texts are an accurate representation of God's will on every matter. Your statement only holds true if you ignore the morality of destroying viable human embryos. Feeding the hungry by grinding up all of the children in orphanages and cooking them into delicious hamburgers does nothing but good if you ignore the morality of killing and grinding up orphans.
