Reading this mornng's Houston Chronicle, there was an article saying that Rehnquist's cancer is "unstoppable" and essentially they are treating him to prolong his life a few months.

With all this in mind, do you think that Rehnquist will resign soon so Bush can nominate a staunch Conservative in his place?

My opinion is that if Bush loses today, Rehnquist resigns from the Court so Bush can nominate a conservative during the lame duck period.

    What do you guys think?

If Bush loses, and then tries this - the Senate will look like I-35 in rush hour - it's going to get all snarled up.

It would be a tight squeeze getting it into the window of opportunity.

I hope he's ok, and if he's not, that he resigns and spends time with his family before he passes away.

Amen to that. I think the reason he needs to do that is twofold. The first reason you stated, and the second reason being that he needs to make sure that Bush can get a conservative in. If he decides to hold on and dies when Kerry assumes power, that'll be one less conservative on the Court.
