Now that we are 4 games into the season and knowing that we lose our unprotected 1st round pick this year. Would you have done this trade, which was proposed by the Warriors last year. Houston sends 1st round pick overall 15th pick overall Cap Fodder (They didn't mention who: Most likely MoT, KT, Cato, Rice?) Golden State sends 3rd pick overall next years 1st round pick (top 3 protected) Antawn Jamison Knowing that the Rockets need to win this year I think this trade would have benefited the Rockets tremendously, Jamison can shoot well (I remember him scoring 50 last year) and can be our 3rd scorer while playing SF, and with the 3rd overall pick they could have picked up an inside prescence player like Amare Stoudemire? It would have also gave us insurance just in case in 2003 we do play like crap and end up with the 1st pick again, we could use the Golden State pick instead. But the cons is we would have to take another max contract with Steve making the max, we couldn't possibly (Luxury Tax) be able to re-sign our own players to big contracts or sign big name free agents for a long time and we would regret taking Yao if he becomes a superstar. On the other hand, Golden State wanted Yao Ming bad, they would have picked him with the 1st round pick and they would also get rid of a max contract player that they felt didn't deserve it. They also wouldn't have to trade the 76ers their (2003 first rounder if its top 3 or 2004 second rounder) for Jiri Welsh, they would have drafted him at #15. New Lineup- PG - Francis SG - Mobley SF - Jamison PF - Griffin C - Stoudemire PG - Arenas SG - Richardson SF - Murphy PF - Fortson C - Yao Ming Truthfully, not being a homer would you have done this?
I think the Rockets need Jamison about as much as the Democrats need Al Gore to make another run at the presidency.
No, because like you said, we're only 4 games into the season and Jamison is seriously overpaid and would cause extreme cap problems. And I can't believe the Warriors honestly proposed that trade. Give up their current franchise player and high draft pick next season to move up two spots in a draft? Seems a bit much.
NO Regrets, Everyone needs to realize it's early in the season. Ming needs time to adjust and that Jamison is not that good, not good enough for the trade. Plus he cost too much! Bad contract!!! And even if we picked A. Stoudemire, it would not have been much different. I'm not a homer and but no way you trade away Ming. Unless the Lakers wanted him for Shaq or Kobe. That would be interesting. Or even a T. Duncan mention is OK. Nothing else. Personally, I live in Houston and I'm very glad the Rockets got Ming. It will take a while and yes I'm disappointed that Ming is not doing better but I saw him live on the home opener and he has skills and he will get better.
here is the problem with your analysis...why do the rockets NEED to win this year? i had no clue this was a must win year. barry bonds NEEDED to win the world series this year cuz he isnt ever going to have another shot. we have no need to win this year...just make it to the playoffs. plus jamison is way overpaid and isn't that amazing. we don't need a max contract player as a 3rd scorer. that is a bad trade.
Im not saying that I would do the trade, but you guys are giving Jamison no credit at all. He is a pretty damn good ball player. He is good for 24 points and 7 boards a game. Yeah, so you can say that he plays on a crappy team. Well, that means that defenses key on him, making it even more difficult to score. Had we had him, he would be our second option and he would be our inside presence. He can play on the outside and on the inside.
No! I do not regret passing on that trade. While that trade mite have helped in the short term. I believe that the Rockets by taking Yao Ming and resigning Francis have laid the foundation for the team to be a Title contender for many years. If the Rockets had made that trade Rudy would have selected Dunlavy with the third pick not Stoudemire.
We would not have drafted Dunleavy because we would already have Jamison on the team. I think we would have traded down a couple spots then grabbed Amare.
I'm going to approach this from a little different angle. Last summer, the Rox had the #1 pick. I think it is safe to assume that there were a great many offers put on the table of the Rockets management. There was nothing offered that altered the eventual selecting of Yao Ming. Major portions of the selection logic included need (a center) and potential. We are now 4 games into the 2002-2003 season. Has Yao Ming done anything significantly good or bad to change a 4 month old decision? Not in my opinion. If that's not enough to desuade you, how about the fact that Jamison has 5 years remaining on his contract with a player option for a sixth (the 2006-2007 season) for a total payout of $66.4m. No thanks.
With this lineup we would be one of the top 6 teams in the west: Hilario Griffin Jamison Mobley Francis or Hilario Jamison Lewis Mobley Francis
Apologies for the previous misfire! I disagree with your premise that the Rockets need to win this year. We'll be disappointed if they don't make the playoffs, but I doubt there will be a full scale revolt, as long as they show improvement and play with heart. This is a b*itch of a conference, remember? Also, to me that lineup above looks like anything but a "win this year" lineup. Two starters who would be a freshmen and a sophomore in college?
Which is why Rudy would have taken Dunlavy with the third pick not Stoudemire. There was too much talent on the board (Gooden, Hilero, Butler, Tishli???) for Rudy to trade down for a HS player with no offensive shot other than a dunk.
In our system, Jamison would play SF. Just like KT, Jamison can still use his post up moves at the SF position.
with this lineup we would be the number 1 in the nba pg Francis Sg Bryant SF Garnett PF Duncan c o'neal
