I am looking to register a couple of domain names but I dont want to have to pay the $35 a year to register.com. In the past I have used www.joker.com (12E a year) but I am having trouble with them right now, I was wondering if anybody knows of any registering places for under $20. Thanks for your help. ------------------ ~John~ Help keep the obsessed thread alive post the reasons why you are an obsessed Rockets fan by clicking here
http://www.dotster.com is $15 per year. http://www.000Domains.com is $13.50 per year (they are the one I use most often). http://www.RegisterFly.com is $9.95 (I've used them before, and they are okay). ------------------ Houston Sports Board

I like www.BuyDomains.com for $16/year (2 year minimum). You get URL and email forwarding for the same lousy $16. I used to use 000Domains until I found BuyDomains.com. ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils. I bought mine with Proboard Technologies. They're a Houston based company. The price is competitive ($17), and the legal issues are not bad. here is some information about them: http://www.domainnamebuyersguide.com/m001/webpages/registrardetail/proboardtechnolo gies.htm and you can register at: http://www.e-names.org/ be sure to check out the Domain Name Buyers Guide at: http://www.domainnamebuyersguide.com ------------------ "Up and down, inside out, outside in, some you lose some you win" -- DMB -> "Sweet Up and Down" [This message has been edited by Vengeance (edited April 09, 2001).]

What are the legal issues that one needs to attend to with regard to domain name registration? ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils. PowerbizOnline.com
You mean with regard to people's names or names of companies you don't own? Stuff like that? The funny thing is that although domains don't fall under copyright laws, precidents are being set in court nearly every day. If you want a domain name and want to avoid litigation, your best bet is to avoid names that could be trademarked unless you have a relationship with the company in question. Failing that, every other name is fair game. Personally, I like the wierd one's because they are interesting. Look at Yahoo or Ask Jeeves or eBay. None of those are exactly common business names. ------------------ And then, depression set in...
I wasn't really thinking about occasions when I might trade on someone else's name but more like losing control over my domain name without failing to renew. I've heard rumors that some (and maybe just the early) domain name registrars had contract language which gave them, effectively, partial ownership of any domain name that they registered or parked. I know it sounds kind of goofy but that's what I heard. Know anything about that? ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils. PowerbizOnline.com
There are some companies that when a customer registered a domain that domain was actually registered in the name of the company rather than in the name of the customer. But companies like 000Domains and Dotster or even NetSol don't do that. (Network Solutions does tend to keep names after they've expired, but that's a different issue). The domain is effectively your property once you register it with one of those companies (or most others). ------------------ Houston Sports Board
