What all should I know about doing this? What all should I save to a cd? Can anyone give me a brief walkthrough of how to do this?

If you are trying to reformat a 98 machine, check out this site

    http://garaje.ya.com/kellygarconi/fcdaiw98.html

I reformatted my cousin's 98 machine last weekend with ease. If it isnt a 98 machine, im pretty sure its the same steps.

I had to reformat my XP machine recently because of a virus (Qhost i believe) that I couldn't get rid of. My comp is new though so I didn't really have anything important on it. I just burned whatever songs and vid files I downloaded and I saved my few documents on my USB key. Then I deleted all that stuff and put my XP install disc in. I guess it auto deletes your hard drive and then reinstalls XP. Then I installed all the other software and drivers that came with my computer.

ok, reformatted, but everything is still around in my hard drive, no clue why. My computer is running faster and the desktop was cleared, but I don't know why the stuff is still around? Can any computer experts help out?

    reformatted which drive?

If you reformatted, there should not be anything there.
    Do you have multiple drives/partitions?
and if you formatted your main drive(c drive) did you reinstall your OS?

Now it's done correctly, maybe next time I should get my friend who knows more about computers to do it.

Hey R2K, my computer keeps restarting especially when I am on the internet. I got an IRQL not less or equal error message one time before it restarted. What's that mean? Any clue why I keep restarting?

Dude, sounds like you have the Blaster virus. Is it some RPC (Remote Procedure Call) error? If it is, more than likely, you got the Blaster virus from 2 months ago.

Another question, I accidentally partitioned another drive, and now I have an 8 mb c drive and a 70+gig d drive, how do I remove the 8mb one and change the 70gig to C?

Don't think it's the Blaster worm because it was restarting before I connected to the net and I installed XP on a clean hard drive. Plus I've downloaded all the updates for XP and I believe one was a patch to prevent Blaster.

How do I found out what RAM is compatible with Windows XP. I'm pretty sure that it is my RAM screwing things up and I'm going to have to purchase some new sticks. I have SDRAM and not DDR. Any suggestions?

When it happens again, write down the exact wording of the error message, it could be many things causing it.
If you can get the exact wording, we can find out what the deal is.

Most RAM will be compatible...buy Crucial or Kingston to be sure.

    Updates:

Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop...choose properties....then go to the Automatic Updates tab...choose how you want it to behave.

    Griffin fan..

either use Partition magic or use your startup disk and fdisk the entire drive. It is pretty much self explaatory, so read everything carefully before proceeding..if your not sure what it means..get on and post here about it..Dave or DoD or Vengeance or codell or myself will normally be glad to help

Here is the exact error message R2K:

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Then in this space it has the normal if any new hardware has been installed, uninstall, enter in Safe Mode, etc.
