Zimmer charged and swung, and Pedro threw him down. Both are wrong, but Martinez is at least partially understandable. But he totally plunked Garcia. No need for that. That said, this was the Red Sox best chance. If they can't win with Pedro on the mound, they have no chance. Sigh. I need a drink...
I thought it was a fan that came over the wall into the bullpen. Classy Boston fans. Rioting and attacking players. Way to go Baaaaahstan!
What do you think he was running out there to do, give him a kiss? Pedro made it a lot less worse than it could've been. He's just supposed to let some guy run over him, because he's 72? Please.
Well, I have no problem giving the Yankees credit for winning today. Clemens outpitched Pedro. For some reason, Pedro didn't seem to want to throw his fastball, making me think that something was wrong with him physically. If Pedro has his normal fastball, I think he would have not given up the hits to Private Gomer Pyle aka Nick Johnson and Godzilla. Once again, I have no idea why he would be throwing at a scrub like Garcia (anyone catch Joe Torre calling Garcia Sergio? LOL), but that 4th inning was one of the most bizarre I have ever seen. After all of that, Pedro started throwing his fastball and I don't think he gave up another hit. Makes me wonder why he decided to go to the fastball. Even though it looks bad for Boston, they have been in worse situations such as the ALDS against Oakland. Even if they lose tomorrow, they still can win 3 in a row because they have done it before. I think that they have hit Wells pretty good this year, except for one time this season. Plus Burkett, despite his 1-7 record, outpitched Mussina at Fenway earlier this season. But the bottom line is that guys on the Red Sox have to start hitting. Garciaparra, Ortiz, and Mueller in particular have yet to show up in the ALCS when it has come to hitting. I know that the Yankees have good starting pitching, but Boston did outscore them in the season series. You would think that they could still hit them, but it seems that some guys choke up in the playoffs. Well, at least the day was not a total loss as Miami beat FSU (the one thing that I was sure would go against my team, i.e. Miami losing today).
Look, I don't condone throwing an old man to the ground, but who the hell does Zimmer think he is taking a swing at Pedro? Yeah Pedro's a headhunter, but you let the big guns deal with him. I still think Boston will win the series in 7 games.
I don't see a punch. It appeared he was grabbing for Martinez, as he bull-rushed him. Zim was at fault for the idiotic move, but Martinez could have handled that in a better way. It's not like a 72 year old man in Zim's condition is going to cause much damage. The pointing to the head is what actually ticked me off more than the Zim showdown. That's low.
No he wasn't going to give him a ****ing kiss. He was rushing Martinez. He was at fault. But Martinez could have handled that better. The guy is 72. Get out of his ****ing way. Why throw him to the ground?
drapg, I do not condone Martinez throwing at Garcia (if he was really throwing at him intentionally). However, Garcia slid hard into Walker and started shoving him. He, Zimmer, Posada, Steinbrenner, Giulani, that Irish Tenor that always sings "God Bless America" in the 7th inning, and everyone else in New York were screaming at Pedro. You, me, BobFinn*, GreenVegan, Pimp, etc don't know what was being said out there. The only ones that knew were the people involved. As I said earlier in this thread, Zimmer needs to remember he is 72 and not 27. Besides, you just picked up on this? Please tell me you weren't watching the entire Texas-OU game?
Oh boy. You do NOT want to get me started. I am a masochist for watching the entire game, from start to finish.
If you're going to say he "threw" him to the ground, then you have to admit Zimmer threw or was in the process of throwing a punch. I was with a group of people that included Yankee fans, they all agreed that what Pedro did was justifiable and understandable. If Karim had just taken his base after the plunk, then none of that would've happened in the first place, even though I'm not really sure why he would've intentionally hit him in that situation.
Look. I'm misdirecting my anger. I'm mixing my feelings towards the Red Sox with over obvious other events that took place today. I apologize. I'm done.
Also I kind of understand Ramirez's reaction. I don't think he wanted to get Clemens ejected, Clemens is a head hunter to, he'll throw a 100 MPH pitch at your head, I'm surprised he didn't do that.
Zim tried to basically tackle 'Dro. 'Dro grabbed his head, which Zim was leading with, stepped to the side and pushed him away. I would have done the same thing.
Someone hit the nail on the head about Fox's announcing crew. They are maddening to say the least to listen to. Tim McCarver is so freaking condescending. And Buck does cling to something and runs it into the ground. What I found funny was that in the 7th inning, McCarver kept saying "I wouldn't be surprised if something else happens in this game and so and so from the Sox gets hit or thrown at." I'm sitting there thinking to myself, "Did McCarver not realize that both benches were warned about throwing inside? Does he not know that is why the Yankees got so upset because they felt like that they got the inside of the plate taken away from them?"
