Yea, so I kinda don't know how to swim. I'm really interested in learning and picking it up as a hobby, but I have no idea where to begin. Can anyone recommend any places that give adult swimming lessons?

My dad and I took lessons at the Y years ago (neither of us knows how to swim). I still didn't really learn and at this point don't really care to. I just stay away from deep water and I'm good.

I mean this sincerely, and I don't mean to be rude or anything, but...how can you NOT swim? How can you not at least float and dogpaddle?

I'm black, been lifeguarding for 7 years now, you'd be surprise at the ridiculously large amount of people(70% kids 30% adults) who can't swim.

i can swim short distances. i can't tread water to save my life. i've read it's possibly due to having more muscle than fat.

i read it on the internet.

it's weird though. i'm not afraid of deep water. i'll jump into any body of water. i know my body will naturally come back up to the surface. i can then swim to the shallow area. i just can't stay afloat in one spot.

EVERYBODY will come back up to the surface. It is scientifically proven.

A few times last year I had to drag people out of the Guadalupe/Llano river. Sitting on the bank taking a smoke break or floating around in the canoe and watching the show, they're halfassed in tubes about to hit a fall and their eyes get reaaaaal big. "Can you swim?" "Nope." I just don't get why you'd be there in the first place.

I've never heard about the physiology aspect, that's interesting. I'll have to read up on that.

I kinda taught a friend from Panama how to swim on campus 19 years ago. Yeah, he only grew up surrounded by two oceans...and couldn't swim. So, no need to feel bad.

^ Like, who doesn't hold their breath when they jump in the water? The science I am talking about is that you have to be less DENSE than the water in which you are swimming, so hold some air in your lungs and BOOM, you're back on the surface. That's too easy. I thought everyone knew that... well... now you do... no?

I can't tread water either, and I tend to sink like a stone in deep water. :(

I can swim. Too skinny to save anyone's life though .

First is gotta learn how to kick your legs. Grab a ledge and start kicking!
Second is to not hold your breath for too long while doing it. Breath normally.
Last is to practice your arms.

Is it possible to forget how to swim? I thought it was like riding a bike, muuuuuchhh harder than I anticipated after not swimming in deep water for years.

Give the guy a break. Not everyone has vast experience swimming across borders like their lives depended on it.

It's true. One of my good friends on the swim team once gained a ton of muscle weight over the summer, and he began to struggle with everything. His 50 free time slowed down by about half a second, which is ridiculous considering we were young and supposed to be going faster by at least a second each year. He also had a very difficult time time in practice.

Our coach repeatedly said it was because he had gained way too much muscle, which somehow affects your ability to float effectively. He was a great swimmer before then also.

I only learned to swim recently. Learned it with little kids. But my instructor was a dolphin; or at least he swam like one.
