Now that the NBA has awarded at 30th franchise to Charlotte (good for Charlotte by the way), I was thinking about realignment. The Commish has said that he would definitely favor it making balanced divisions in terms of numbers and even increasing regional rivalries much like what the NFL tried to do when the Texans entered the league.

With 30 teams, there would most certainly be a switch to three 5-team divisions in each conference. How killer of a division would the Rockets be in?

    Houston
    Dallas
    San Antonio
    Memphis
    New Orleans

Damn, that would be a smokin' division.

Isn't any division with MoT already a smokin' division? :p

How exactly would 3 five team divisions work for the playoffs? The three winners get the 1,2,3 seeds and the other five go to the other top records?

And yes that would be a pretty damn tough division!

Wow, if that would in fact be the division that u had in mind, you could pretty much say whoever wins that is the NBA champs haha.....I think contraction would be better than addition of teams though. It's stupid that teams like Cleveland, Denver, and all the other teams with bad record play for ping pong balls instead of to win--it'd be a better league if there were less teams with more talent on each, of course they'd never be as stacked as the Rockets, but it would make other teams better.

that would be a killer grouping (with memphis being killed by the other 4 :D). what other groups would there be? min would probably move to the eastern conf...

    some potential groupings...

    west coast cities:
    lal
    lac
    gsw
    sac
    sea

    midwest cities:
    dal
    hou
    mem
    no
    san

    filler group:
    pho
    utah
por (they got stoned and aren't sure where they are :p)
    den
??? another team currently from the least

    sauna cities:
    mia
    orl
    atl
    cha
    ???

    middle of nowhere cities:
    cle
    ind
    mil
    det
    min

that's a lot of snow cities (aka major market cities):
    tor
    nyk
    nj
    bos
    was

i still need to put phi & chi in there somewhere i'm not from the us, so my geography of all 50 states is not perfect :)

anyone got any other grouping ideas???

    Jeff,

I see a problem with the alignment of the divisions when they add Charlotte. Here is how I see it:

    Western Conference

    Midwest Division

    Dallas
    Houston
    Memphis
Minnesota (not right geographically, but at least in the right time zone)
    New Orleans

    Southwest Division

    Denver
    LA Clippers
    Phoenix
San Antonio (they are the closest; cant really put Dallas or Houston here)
    Utah

    Northwest Division

    Golden State
    LA Lakers
    Sacramento
    Seattle
    Portland

    Eastern Conference

    Great Lakes Division

    Cleveland
    Chicago
    Detroit
    Milwaukee
    Toronto

    Northeast Divison

    Boston
    New York
    New Jersey
    Philadelphia
    Washington

    Southeast Division

    Atlanta
    Charlotte
    Indiana
    Miami
    Orlando

The problem is the number of teams in the SW area of the US in comparison with those in the NE area are not proportianate.

I took SA out of our division in order to give the SW Division 5 teams (they were the closest to the other teams in that division).

I split up the Clippers and Lakers. It doesnt make much sense geographically, but I figure who cares about the Clippers.

Also, if you dont put SA in the SW division (I hate to split up all the Texas teams), then LA Lakers have to go here and Minnesota would have to go to the NW division to bring the # of teams to 5 and New Orleans moves out of our division into the Eastern Conference.

Anyone else have suggestions on how to clean up this mess?

I think Dallas and San Antonio have to be in our division. Also, will there be an East/West split still? Will playoffs be played differently? 16 teams still? Will teams with strong divisions have a disadvantage going to the post season?

I don't like realignment, we could get a gift or a nightmare.

Good breakdowns though, they look all look feasible.

What does it matter? As long as we are in the top 8, we make the playoffs. The only thing divisions have to do with it is basically home-court advantage.

this is the same alignment i came up with when i wrote it out also - - but i'd change the divison names according to your list as follows

    Eastern Conference
Atlantic (NYK, NJ, phila, bos, tor)
Southeast (atl, char, miami, orl, was)
Central (ind, chi, mil, det, cle)

    Western Conference
Midwest (hou, sa, dal, nahlens, memphis)
Pacific (LAL, LAC, sac, gs, phx)
Northwest (por, sea, utah, den, min)

top 8 in each conference go-- seeded similar to NHL - - where in some cases the weak #3 seed division winner (ex: northwest division) would be an underdog to a #6 seed (ex: San Antonio) in the 1st round of the West Playoffs - -

it could be great! 4 divisions is not enough - -

Why wouldn't they just add CHarlotte to the East, and move New Orleans to the West?(simply)

It wouldn't be fair though. The East would REALLY be trashy.

I had another question about this new franchise. From what I'm reading, each team can protect 8 players, and Charlotte can pick from the rest.

Which 8 players would we protect?

I think we'd be one of the teams Charlotte picks from, because we're deep. Portland too. Probably Sacramento:

    Divac
    Clark
    Pollard
    Webber
    Turkoglu
    Stojakovic
    Christie
    Bibby
    Bobby Jackson

Imagine, one of those guys is up for grabs. Probably Pollard though.

Who would WE protect? Here are my picks in order of importance:

    Ming
    Griffin
    Boki
    Mobley
    Francis
    Cato
    Posey
    Rice (One year contract)

I'd leave MoT out, but that would be like leaving him out in the cold. Terrible for the organization if he realized we left him to be picked.
