Did we ever do it with our post players? Why didn't we ever do it? I mean I remember Hakeem played or when I now watched Shaq played, once the center is thrown the ball, here comes the double team...then the center throws the ball back out and while the defender relaxes a second they throw him the ball again...then the center has better position and can score easily. I wonder why we never did it if we wanted to give Yao the ball more. I mean this would not only work with Yao but with the post players e.g. Taylor as well. I never understand why we never did it.
because when we get the ball to Yao he takes his time in the post. if we give him a re entry it will be too late in the shot clock for him to do anything. One of the problem Yao is having is with the shot clock adjustment. with time he will figure it out. But we should definately do it sometimes tocatch the defense offguard.
I agree that he holds the ball far too long in the post and eats the shot clock. But the reason he holds the ball is because his position isn't simply not deep enough and he needs to dribble to get deeper. If we have the entry passer available on the strong side with him, he can pass it out and establish deeper position WITHOUT the ball. This way, his ball would not be stolen so easily from a help defender from weak side.
If Yao can get into a deep position even without the re-entry pass, isn't it even better? From the games I get to watch, Yao seems to stand around the FT line far too often..... I mean, for a player like him, shouldn't he try to get around the charging line? that will be a good position to score.... and for a scorer like him, that will be great!!
That's because of Rudy T's dumb offense, using Yao as a giant screen for the guards, instead of as an offensive machine.
Granted Yao didn't have the strength to establish position yet like Shaq. That's why we need to try many more different ways. We should try to swing the ball around the perimeter and have Yao moving from side to side and sometimes reversing the ball from strong to weak side to get him the ball. Some pick and roll on the weak side can be used as well. When I watched Lakers played, even Shaq didn't get position easily every time but even then Lakers would make many time multiple attempts on the same possession to get the ball inside to Shaq. On the other hand we usually look into Yao once and if he's not open there would be no further attempts. Sigh...
1) Rockets don't have enough "PATIENCE" to do re-entry passes. The Rockets far too often will only give Yao the ball if they can do it "easily." The first time it looks like they might have to work a little hard at it they swing it around. Additionally, when they do get the ball to him, the passer cuts to the basket leaving Yao alone without someone to lob the ball out to and then get it back. 2) Rockets don't get Yao the ball EARLY enough in the shot clock that allows them TIME to do re-entry passes. Either the Rockets are slow getting the ball up court or perhaps Yao is slow coming up the court himself. I agree with you on the re-entry passes. But to do that the team has to have faith in Yao Ming and have faith that if they give him time he can score on the low blocks. All part of the learning process for this team. Chris
Yao needs to establish a deeper post position, close to the basket right there at the lane. I've been heard complaining that all we ever do with Yao once we give him the ball in the post is the entry-passer cuts to the basket. If the pass isn't there, Yao is ISO'd on his side and either has to put up a shot (most likely if not double-teamed) or make an unadvised cross-court pass. Late against the Knicks, I see why we don't give Yao any strong-side help. Spree had that steal when Yao put the ball on the floor. So Yao's simply gonna hafta get a deeper post position to spread the floor better, so his strong side help won't have to clear out the entire side of the court for him.
The only players patient enough to do it are Rice and Posey. I think I've seen them let Yao re-position. Francis and Mobley are always looking for their shot that it probably doesn't occur to them most of the time.
Exactly. Yao needs to establish deeper position. But he can't get into the ideal position at once every single time. No one could do that even Shaq couldn't do that. That's what re-entry pass is needed in this kind of situation. It also minimizes the dribbling Yao needs to do and decreases the chance of the ball being stolen.
