So I'm outside today, tending to the freedom garden next to the reinforced bunker and I'm looking over everything. Carrots are doing awesome...Cabbage looks good. Spinach though isn't growing as fast as I'd thought...A month in and I'd figure they would be larger, well I remember that the leaves when young actually taste better... I find the "courage" to take a bite (after rinsing off) and lo behold, I'm in love with it. I actually enjoyed the taste of fresh homegrown raw spinach better than cooked. First time I realized this.... Question I have is their some foods you prefer raw rather than cooked as well? (i.e. seafood, etc.)
With meats it depends. I like raw seafood in sushi and sashimi but like them cooked in other dishes. I've eaten things like steak tartar but I prefer beef, chicken, pork and other meats be cooked. I like pork medium and, if I can get it, most cuts of beef to be medium rare or rare. As for fruits and veggies, I prefer most fruits raw and with veggies it just depends.
I need to try artichokes some time. Me and my girl go to this Italian eatery and she orders some pasta dish with artichoke hearts but always has them held off. I'll need to try them next time.
May I suggest that you boil a whole one for 20 minutes. Then pull the leaves off and dip them in butter, or garlic butter, etc. Best snack or pre-meal appetizer ever. Just remember that when you get to the thistle you need cut the heart out inside of it. This is what the heart looks like:
I can't stand salmon, no matter what you do with it... unless it's raw. Then it's the bomb! Cabbage is better raw too.
Same as you, I much prefer raw spinach to cooked. In fact, I can't stand cooked spinach, but love nothing better than a good spinach salad. Go figure.
Veggies - Raw Meat - Cooked, but not overcooked. Medium - Medium/Well At most. For some reason I can't get into steamed veggies. I like the crunch. Not that I'll pick them out or anything, but if I had a choice, raw.
Fatty's artichoke picture with the butter just reminded me of Roasted Garlic cloves for some reason. Whole garlic clove drizzled with olive oil with salt and pepper flakes on top baked in oven for 1 hour and heaven. Spread it on bread or top it off on some steak, throw a couple pieces in mashed potatoes before blending, or just eat it as is. Soooooo good! Here's a tutorial and picture http://whatscookingamerica.net/rstgarlic.htm
Not sure I know how to eat them. LOL! I mean can you eat the whole thing or just the heart? While I am asking questions, what do they taste like?
You peel the leaves off, dip the end with the meat on it into butter, and scrape the meat into your mouth with your teeth. When I get to the heart, I quarter it and dip it in the butter, also. As far as taste? Very unique.
Fatty's way of eating the leaves dipped in butter is AMAZING. However, I boil it for 45 min to an hour to get the meat soft enough to eat. 20 min seems kind of short. If you cut the stalk off flat before cooking, and push down on the top after cooking, the leaves separate quite nicely to make it easier to eat. Just make sure you take the top section of the heart off. You'll only make that mistake once.
