Definitely. Apparently there’s a long lost directors cut as they had to essentially cut like 45 minutes.
Richard Jewell - 8/10 - Stunningly well done. I guess it's not really stunning considering who the director was. Sam Rockwell put in a great performance I thought. Jon Hamm too. Only negative was the unnecessary part about the female reporter exchanging sex for confidential info. It never happened so why add it? So annoying when Hollywood feels the need to add extra fluff to an already compelling true story.
Recently caught two movies on Amazon Prime. "'71" which is a movie set in Belfast during the Troubles about a British soldier who get's separated from his unit during a riot. It really captures the feeling of the chaos of that time and the moral ambiguities between the traditional IRA, the younger generation of Provisional IRA, the UDA (Protestant Paramilitary) and the British military. Even not knowing the history of the conflict it's a good action movie and takes place over one night with the soldier trying to get back to his unit and caught up in the machinations of the other combatants. "The Black Book" A book set in at the end of WWII in occupied Holland. It is about a Jewish woman who becomes a spy for the Dutch resistance inside Nazi headquarters. Another movie with a lot of moral ambiguities with some twist regarding who are the good guys and questions regarding loyalties and collaboration. It is direct Paul Verhoeven and stars Carice Van Houten, the Red Priestess from GOT.
The silencing. 3/10. Parts of it were solid but it’s almost like they filmed it without knowing the script and plugged a bunch of scenes together hoping it made for a thriller. Wished they would have given Jaime Lannister a sword though
The Decline - 7.3/10 Found the movie on Netflix. It's about French-Canadian preppers training out in the wilderness. It does have subtitles. I have to say it was an unexpectedly good movie.
The King's Choice. About Norway in WWII. very good, 9/10 Last Flag Flying. Excellent, Steve Carell in a really subtle role, 9.5/10. The Four Feathers. Been a while since I watched this. 8/10 3:10 to Yuma, Crowe and Bale, holds up great, 9/10, maybe 10/10. Public Enemies, holds up great, Depp is terrific, 9/10. Khartoum, with Charlton Heston, had never seen it. well worth watching. 8.5/10 Waiting for Anya, surprised by how good this is. 9/10 Within the Whirlwind, another surprisingly good film. 9/10 Training Day, had never seen it! a bit far fetched near the end, otherwise solid. 8/10 Reds, with Warren Beatty. Better than the first time around. 9/10 The Conversation, with Gene Hackman. Great stuff. 9/10 surprise ending American Pickle, Seth Rogen is great. 8/10
watched this last night with your review. thought it was excellent. agree about the Kathy Scruggs thing though. still 9/10
Downloaded a bunch of HBO documentaries last week. They're always so well done. The Loving Story - Amazing doc about an interracial couple in the 60's who were arrested for....being married. I started Diego Maradona last night and can't wait to finish it after the wife and kids go to bed tonight.
Really enjoyed that movie. Jeff Bridges is always good and and Kate Beckinsale is spicy. Finished Project Power on Netflix. Solid movie, entertaining, playing off the whole mutant fad.
watched Hotel Rwanda tonight. just as powerful now as when it first came out. 9/10 Don Cheadle is amazing. watched The Soloist afterwards. Not quite as convincing, but Jamie Foxx was amazing though. 7.5/10
We watched Fathers and Daughters on Prime last night. 6 out of 10. Sad movie (hence the lower rating) but neither my wife nor older daughter cried. Well acted (Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Diane Kruger, Aaron Paul).
I checked the Rotten Tomato scores, saw they were terrible, but decided to watch anyhow because of Jeff Bridges. He did not disappoint. It didn't hurt that the movie left me feeling good, either.
Despite the ratings or "scores", is it still worth watching? I was kinda shocked that the critics shat on it, given what people said about it in this thread.
I'm not a big love story sort of guy, so I'm somewhat hesitant to recommend it, but I truly enjoyed it. I don't want to get your expectations up or give anything away (not that there's a whole lot to give away), but there were some surprises, the performances were great, it was under 1 1/2 hours long, and I found it uplifting. It didn't hurt that I could relate to the main character, either.
