Ramadan is the 9th month of the muslim calender year and I think they fast during daylight hours and then only eat small meals at night... might be wrong though, as I am not muslim.

Why can't you eat during daylight hours? Does something happen to the food? Is there a fairy? Sorry, don't mean to sound insensitive, but explain it like you would to a four-year-old. I don't know the reasons behind it.

By the way, I am a Catholic, but not as devout.

From my understanding, it's similar to Lent where you give things up for a certain amount of time.

Hope everybody has a pleasent Ramadan,as I am trying to. I am not Muslim but I am partaking in this holy month. Let me explain.

To build camradarie and strength amongst my employees I told them I would offer a challenge of anyone who can strictly follow the rules of Ramadan that they would receive 10% extra in their monthly paycheck. The main concept was the rigors of no food or water during daylight hours.

The catch is if you agree to the deal, and fail you are deducted 5% from monthly paycheck.
If you are caught cheating, you will be deducted 10% of monthly paycheck. So its better to fess up and say you are out, then try to cheat your way through it.

The money gained or earned does not go to our company. I have established it to that to go the person's least favorite charity. This hopefully will give them extra motivation to not give in.

For a long time I have been intrigued by the discipline of Muslims, and thus I am partaking in the contest myself.

Anyone in my company is eligible for the contest, except those who already partake in Ramadan. Out of 25 employees in three offices, I got 10 takers including myself. I'll let you know how it goes, if anyone is interested. I have never really fasted before, but I am looking forward to this challenge.

A friend of mine at work is from Pakistan and is Muslim, however he just ate a turkey sandwich from Quiznos. I asked him about it and he was impressed that I knew today was Ramadan (thanks to this board) and then he said that as long as his family doesn't know that he ate it, then he doesn't care. He said he loves food and can't go without it all day and still get any work done. I thought that was interesting.

Thanks, but no thanks. I want to hear what someone who follows this has to say about it. I bet they FOLD just like reggietodd's friend did. I can't go without snacking. Snacking RULES.

I want to know WHY. I don't want to know WHEN or HOW MUCH. Any Islamic follower care to answer my question sincerely? Not just "because it's my religion"... WHY?

It's not really any more interesting than reading that Christians have Lent or the Ten Commandments yet they continue to sin or "cheat" on the beliefs daily. No matter what the religion, we're all human and ultimately "fail" at religion often.

Usually because during daytime hours is when we work the hardest and when we live our lives normally and also have 2 meals. IF we were told to fast during night time hours, most people would just eat all day then sleep, and the whole concept wouldnt be too benefitial, where the concept is that we feel the pain and hunger of those in need.

Thanks, adeel. So it's empathy? WOW. I like the WILL POWER and to be able to restrain yourself from doing something that you like (or that keeps you alive) must be tough... what about sex? Can you have ANY including self-gratification? Also, what is the point of fasting if you're going to pig out when the sun goes down? I don't want to move this into the D&D, I just want to know the reasons for this... I really AM interested.

Ya, I have many friends who are muslim, and yet they drink, eat pork, have premarital sexual relations, and even do drugs, even though these are strictly against the teachings of Islam...

Every religion has people who arent perfect, and every person makes mistakes...

Some people dont fast because they cant kick the nicotene habit. Some just cant stay away from food. BUt in our beliefs the one who gives up the most gets rewarded the most... Its all on our intentions.

My buddy from Pakistan is the same way. He doesn't follow the rules strictly etc. The only time he really is devout is when he has relatives around. He has had sex, drinks, smokes green...etc. That's not all that unusual.

A person who is fasting can not have sexual relations with his wife. But once the sun goes down, he can do whatever he wants regarding those type of relationships.(as long as its again, in the bounds of islam)

And pigging out when sun goes down is the problem with many many muslims, We should enjoy our food and all, but also we musnt pigg out as youve said. The prophet pbuh used to eat a date before starting his fast and end his fast with a date and some water...
