He was allegedly unemployed. What's he supposed to do, print his own money? He's gone from being $22,000 behind, to only $661 behind. If he was truely unemployed, then he's not a deadbeat. Otherwise, you have a point. Do you know if he wasn't unemployed? I don't.
He's a deadbeat because he didn't fullfill his responsibilities, taking care of his kid. How do you go from a millionaire to what he has become today?? Bad decision making!!! There is NO WAY an ex NBA millionaire player can't support his kids!! No excuse!!

What kind of Job is he supposed to get, McDonalds? The guy has only one skill and it's basketball, I doubt anybody is interested in him as a coach or a scout. I wonder how much Sampson made, I mean, was he in the era of huge multimillion dollar contracts? What does his ex do for living btw. Was there a custody battle? These are the kind of things that I wonder before I jump to accuse the guy.
No he didn't have the humungous contract like players today, but he still made millions. I can't understand how someone who only can make money in a short period of time would not invest wisely. Hell buy a car dealership, have good people run it, and your set for life. What can he do now? Scout, player development, coach at a high school or be an assistant at some level.
Bad decision making does not always make you a deadbeat!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to make an assumption here & assume that you've never been laid off from a high paying job before. Child support payments are based on your income at the time the court makes a ruling. If he was making millions (as you presume) at the time of the court's ruling, then he's going to have to find another high paying job to continue making those payments. As for his bad decision making, that happens all the time in pro sports. These kids go straight from school into the high paying world of pro sports & blow their money on every expensive item they can lay their eyes on. They have no concept of saving for the future. Add to that, the people that are out there just waiting to con them out of their money, & you have a strong opportunity for making bad financial decisions. I don't know what Sampson's situation is, but I've been through some hard times myself & I know that you do the best you can to get through them. So, unless you know all the facts about Sampson's case, I'd have to call your accusation, a case of bad decision making on your part. But, it doesn't make you a deadbeat, does it?
While he still had money, Sampson invested big bux in a company called "Heavy Rope". It was a weighted, thick jump rope that conditioned your body. No one bought one, and that cost him a butt load. From there, who knows. He tried to get on with Virginia as coach. I guess the couch got him instead.
but at the time he was making this money, he didnt know his career would be cut so short by injuries. he was young and making so much money for the first time. he most probably thought his career would last 10-15 years. so he probably spent alot of that money quickly. anyway, i'm not trying to excuse him for what he is doing now.
I can understand that. That is why you surround yourself with intelligent people that can guide you in the right direction. His damn agent should have known better and suggested that he invest in case his career faultered.
The NBA wasn't always as it is now. Minimum salary requirements were less than $50K per year. There are still guys who played in the league in the 70's for 10+ years who received no pension, no medical benefits, nothing.
This is true. He's been negligent. But he's paying for those mistakes. We don't even know the whole story. So, don't jump to conclusions.
Uh, sometimes, investing instead of saving is what screwews up some athletes futures. I just read Moneyball, and the signing bonus Billy Beane got, was completely lost on bad investments. Also, sometimes, agents either find ways to steal from you or also give you bad investment advice, ie Heavy Rope.
he's still a (expletive). the guy deserves what he gets. after all, what sort of jerk doesn't show up to his own wedding? if anyone out there knows why he didn't (and it's gotta be the best damn reason in the world), then I'll gladly take these remarks back of course. it's unfortunate that he'll always be so closely associated with the Rockets, IMO.
