He is from Uruguay. I think he did really well. His playtime increased significantly. In the first two games, He came off the bench and only played a couple of minutes. But for the last two, he was a starter. I think he has the potential to be the next Calderon.
I thought he looked very comfortable out there. He plays with a lot confidence. Too bad there's no room for him, man we could use a 6' 5" PG.
He had the odd no look pass but other than that he looks shaky out there. Too many mistakes (carrying, travelling, dribbling out of bounds) that lead to TO and it's only SL.
In the last game against Washington he stood out to me as the best player, and the only other player who seemed to be worth anything was Mike Harris. Granted it's only one game, but already he looks to me like someone heads-and-shoulders above Spanoulis, whose game was basically tailor-made for the FIBA rules and worthless in the NBA. With Barrerra you already know he's got plus height for a PG, and he's got pretty good to great court vision. His shot was on that last game, but it had not been so in previous games where he may have been nervous just starting out and only getting garbage minutes. And as for his defense, no one was taking advantage of him in the game I saw. He even got a few steals, and he actually made a pretty heady play pretending to attempt a drawn charge just to get his man to stumble with the ball. He doesn't seem quick but he also seems to have a good sense about how to change speeds; I think there was a reason Morey brought him over, and even if he doesn't make the team this year we'll be keeping tabs on him.
Agreed. Maybe we can pick him up next year, you know just in case the Aaron Brooks taking over the Point busts.
I just found this in one site from my country, for those who are still interested: "Gustavo Barrera junto a Oski Moglia ya están de retorno en Houston esperando por comenzar la vuelta a Montevideo después de participar de la Liga de Verano de la NBA. " It basically says Barrera is back in Houston, waiting to return to Montevideo (Uruguay). Osky Moglia is his agent. He said Barrera's performance was positive, left a good impression, to his teammates too. He also said that there are other teams interested in him, naming Cleveland, Seattle and New York. Take it for what it's worth. Link: http://www.basquetcaliente.com/
I know it's not the best time to post this since playoffs are coming, but since it's Rockets related.... It says the Rockets have invited Barrera again for this year's SL. His manager says the Rockets have followed Barrera all this time while he was playing here and are very interested. He averaged 17.0 ppg 9.0 apg 4.4 rpg and 3.0 spg in the past uruguayan league. His team was eliminated in the semi finals by the champion, with a last second 3. He is currently playing for Trotamundos in Venezuela and his contract has a clause that allows him to go to the NBA. He'll play for Uruguay NT in the FIBA World Championship Qualyfier.
