I recently posted here about getting my TX drivers license converted from my NC drivers license. I'm wondering something:

Do I need to show proof of liability insurance on a car thats IN the state of Texas? For example,

I have insurance on my moms car here in North Carolina. Can I keep this insurance policy on my moms car, move to TX, convert my license legally, and still be able to drive other cars temporarily?

If someone can help clear this up for me it'll be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

PS: I'm sorry for being ag!

From what I know, you need Tx ins for a TX license.

That being said, why do you want a TX license? NC car insurance should be MUCH less, and you can legally operate a vehicle here as long as you keep your "permanent" address in NC.

Unless you're staying here for a long while, that would be my suggestion.

And even then, I would wait as long as possible. Hell, I've known people that set up a "permanent address in LA, just so they can save money on car insurance.

Damn.... see... I live in NC now but I'm moving to Houston a week from today actually, on the 28th. I will be staying at my girlfriends house. I got an email from the DMV (DPS) in Houston saying I have 30 days to change my NC livense to TX license, after that, it would be invalid. I mean I'm going to have a job and everything and my physical "permanent" address for about a month or so will be my girlfriend's parents address.

Insurance is sky high there in Houston. For example, liability insurance on my mom's 91' Lumina here for me is $700 every 6 months, in Houston, it's about $1,850 every 6 months. Do I have any chance at getting out of this very sticky situation?

Yeah, if your folks live in NC, keep that address as your permanent one.

It's a little dishonest, but you'll save money on insurance.

THE disclaimer is that you need to drive a car with NC plates, and if you get into a wreck, that would be the time to change. (Ins. companies will get REAL suspicious if you get into more than one wreck in the same area that far away.)

damn, you had my hopes up for a while there. The car I was going to drive would be my girlfriends. She's live in TX all her life so yeah, it has TX tags. But thanks anyway bud.
