OK, I guess I'd better try to clarify this one for y'all, having had first hand experience. I'm going by memory so if I get anything wrong and insult anyone, I apologize. I'm definitely not the most religious Jew in the universe. It kind of depends how religious the person is and how strictly he or she follows the laws of Kashruth (Jewish dietary "law" that determines what is Kosher and what is not). Strict Kashruth deems that Jews do not eat pork or shellfish and do not eat meat and drink milk at the same time. Beef, Chicken, Veal, etc. must be slaughtered by a Kosher butcher in a special way that includes reciting prayers. I have Jewish friends that follow the laws of Kashruth devoutly, and I have Jewish friends that eat bacon for breakfast every day. As for me, I occasionally like to eat bacon or sausage on the weekends, but I love to eat shellfish. I don't know if I could be an Orthodox Jew because I would probably suffer shrimp, crawfish, oyster, clam, crab & lobster withdrawals. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker [This message has been edited by RocketMan Tex (edited December 20, 2000).]
I'll just add to what RMTex had to say on the subject. The Law allows Jews to eat animals that have a split hoof and chews the cud (unless I've got that backwards). Therefore, cows, sheep, goats, etc are ok because they have a split hoof and chew the cud. Pigs have a split hoof (I think; I'm a real city-slicker) but don't chew the cud. Horses chew the cud but don't have a split hoof. Rabbits do not have hooves and cannot be eaten (the same is true of humans). Jews can also eat fowl and fish with impunity (if it is properly slaughtered) but shellfish like lobster, crab, etc. are illegal. Jews are also not allowed to eat blood, nor eat any meat whose owner-animal is still alive. There are rules concerning the slaughter of the animal to be sure these rules are followed. However, these rules are not Biblical but rabbinical (which doesn't make them any less important for many Jews). There are also rules about cooking that Orthodox Jews follow. They will have some dishes designated for meat and others designated for milk (this is to avoid "boiling a calf in its mother's milk"), because a cooking utensil can be tainted by the food it touches. For the same reason, observant Jews have a minimum wait between having meat and having dairy (I think it's 3 hours or so). Some Jews also consider their food unkosher unless a Jew cooks it -- the rabbinical short-cut (there is one (and a very long one) for every rule) is to have a Jew turn on the oven and then have the Gentile cook it. As for fruits and vegetables, I don't think there are any restrictions on what can be eaten or how. As for my credentials, I am not a Jew, observant or otherwise. I just have some Jewish friends, an understanding of the Old Testament, and an interest in the subject. If I'm wrong on anything (especially the type of hoof each animal has and whether or not it chews the cud) please tell me. ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/

to clarify the meat and milk thing: It's not only drink milk, it's also any dairy products at the same time/meal (ie: no tacos, or steak and a baked potato w/cheese). I don't follow strictly, but I have never eaten any bacon, pork, lobster, crab etc. in my like. Also the "special way" of slaughtering the cow is the most humane way possible, and a rabbi/religiously qualified person must be present. ------------------ The Serious Police are watching. Who says Right Wingers aren't funny? Actually, I haven't heard of any Jews eating human flesh, but, then again, I'm not sure if there were any Jews in the Donner party or not! ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker

u dont eat lobster? or are u not supposed to be eating lobster? Probably not because lobsters are bottom feeders. Seinfeld had an episode about lobsters not being Kosher. First, there is another thing I remembered (or was reminded of): the Law prohibits eating any animal that eats carrion. Therefore bottom-feeders (like lobster, and, I think, catfish) are prohibited. Also, things like vultures are prohibited. As for the owner-animal: I didn't want to restructure my sentence half-way through so it ended uo not making much sense. What I mean is that the animal being fed upon must be dead. There was at the time, apparently, a pagan practice of cutting off some of the flesh of an animal -- leaving it hurt but alive -- and eating it. The Jews were supposed to avoid this practice (and the boiling a calf in its mother's milk thing, and the don't drink blood thing)) to set them apart from their pagan neighbors and not fall into their occult practices (which they promptly did). Of course, this Law also means eating raw oysters is a big no-no. This is a very long way to say: buy the Omaha steaks (they are very good) but don't buy the lobster. Lobster is certainly not kosher. Sorry to go off on all of you -- there's just something about kosher rules (and rules for keeping the Sabbath holy -- watch for a thread coming soon) that really sparks my interest. ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
