and feeding newborn babies? I'm the proud new owner of a 7 day old bouncin baby boy. Any ideas on how to get this dude to eat. He licks the nipple and eventually takes the nipple and a good bit of the aureola into the mouth. Sucks with joy for about 5 minutes, and then promptly falls into a deep milk induced coma. The books say he should suck on both breasts for 20 minutes each. I know a few of you on here are also new dads. How do you keep these little dudes awake? We've tried stripping him naked, changing diaper, cold towel, heroine. Nothing seems to work very effectively.
Take it easy on him, I doubt he's getting much sleep. I think at that age, you just let them eat whenever they want. A baby won't go hungry if he knows how to get to the milk. If he falls asleep, then he'll wake up when he's hungry. My baby girl just turned 6 months and I don't think she has eaten for 20 minutes straight EVER much less from each breast ...and she is now 75% in weight. After a few weeks, he'll get on a better eating pattern. Then at around 6 weeks he'll have a growth spurt and he'll probably eat non-stop. Congrats on your boy and good luck.
Are they awesome? YES As for the new born, he'll figure out the tit thing his own. As for sleeping schedule, he needs to be programmed. You can google this. The key is when you feed and what you feed your beautiful new child. Congrats. My sons 19 and very expensive.
I think the 15-20 minutes on each side refers to total time, not time "sucking". Imagine drinking milk for 20 straight minutes... My son in just over 4 months, and went 10 weeks on breast milk. I think eventually he just ate from one side, so my wife had to alternate which side she fed him from. I was always terrified he wasn't getting enough, but the doctor said as long as he was making 6 wet diapers a day, he was fine. Something must have worked because at 4 months, he was 27 inches long, which put him in the 95 percentile for height.
I've had four children cut in the teat line in front of me so I know something about this... Eventually, he'll want to eat when he wakes up... you didn't indicate what kind of feeding schedule you are on with him. If you can't keep him awake with a cold towel, he needs sleep more than he needs sustenance. He should start gaining weight in the near future. If that trend is okay, don't worry. Is it possible you are waiting too long to feed him? Try and establish a schedule that works for your wife and you or you'll be at his mercy in a short while....
My moms a child birth educator and she always talks about how beneficial it is to breastfeed. There have been studies and it's proven to be extremely advantageous for the immune system and IQ. And the longer the better. Why some parents do formula I have no clue. Random fact: the nipple actually has many many holes in it, not just one like youd think. How bout that.
When I first saw the title 'Q about breasts' I was ready to answer... Then I see 'breastfeeding', I dont know much about that
Rent "Cable Guy" and wait for the jail visit. Billyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
Maybe I can check to make sure the nipples are functioning correctly. All kidding aside, I wish your baby a happy and healthy childhood.
Anybody ever seen that movie with Martin Short and Annette O'Toole? The movie is about their dating relationship and her breasts in particular. It's pretty funny. I'll see if I can find/remember the name of it.
Yes, they do have multiple holes, like little lawn sprinklers. It's weird. I have never had a kid, and all this talk isn't exactly making me want to go through the process. 20 minutes on each side? Does it hurt? Or does it just feel strange? Better bring some homework to work on if it takes that long. Anyway, I don't look forward to: them getting bigger (trust me, they don't need to be any bigger than they are), or swelling up, or hurting. I'm sure your kid is doing what he needs to do. He'll probably drink more as he gets bigger.
