Okay........I bought the first two unchartered titles (thanks to everyone for their suggestions, but uncharted seemed to be the closest thing to a consensus..........and it had great reviews on amazon), a charging stand, and some combo pack that had an extra controller and God of War collection. I'll probably take moes suggestion too.........although I have a DAC on order for streaming audio.
My recs in no particular order: - God of War (the first two were on PS2, but they did PS3 versions/remasters) - Killzone 2 and 3 (the first one was for PS2 only) - Batman: Arkham Asylum - Uncharted 1 and 2 I see you have ordered/purchased GoW and Uncharted. You're off to a good start. Now go have fun.
This is what I use, if you have a nice router you can do this wirelessly but wired is always preferred. I love PSM because it's the only one that streams my .MKV files.
I've been running into that issue where it recognizes I'm watching a downloaded movie streaming off my PC or my networked HDD (seagate Armor).
Aha. That's good to know. I was going to suggest a (longer) laundry-list of things, but if you haven't played games much, probably better to keep it to a list of games that's easier to pick up... Good call on buying the Uncharted games already. Suggestions LittleBigPlanet 1 & 2: Sony's (very good) answer to Mario. Heavy Rain: This is like playing a mystery novel (or a Choose Your Own Adventure book, if you're familiar with those). It requires no traditional videogame coordination, everything is quick-time events, so it's incredibly easy to pick up and play. There are many different endings and it's more about using your brain and seeing the story play out than gameplay, per se. Portal 2: One of the best puzzle games of all time, and the dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny. Burnout Paradise: My favorite all-time driving game. Very arcadey, but the focus on wrecking your opponents is soooo fun. And it just FEELS really fast. Plants vs Zombies: Simple tower defense game. Charming art style, great sense of humor, and very addicting. Any Ratchet & Clank game: Pixer-style shoot-'em-up platformer. All of these are very easy to pick up and pretty family-friendly, other than Heavy Rain (nudity). For the most part they aren't that new either, so they should be cheap.
Sony is releasing the first two Uncharted games along with all of the map packs for Uncharted 2 for $40 on September 6. I'd hold out for that if you want to get two of the better PS3 games for a low price. I'd also recommend Arkham Assylum, but the sequel comes out next month and looks like it will blow that game out of the water (kind of on par with with Uncharted 1 and 2). For a lower time threshhold, you should check out some downloadable games. Outland and Braid were both outstanding games that you can pick up for about $10. They're old school games, but done with a nice polish and a twist on gameplay.
Must get: Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Demon's Souls Recommend: Call of Duty 4, Ratchet and Clank Future 2, Killzone 3, God of War Collection, Resident Evil 5, Super Street Fighter 4, Little Big Planet 2, Oblivion, Dead Space 2, Assassin's Creed 2
