BTW, how long does a 5 lb. jug of whey usually last, if you drink let's say 3 shakes per day?

i use skim milk but i know you can't.

but they work fine in water, it's just going to be a lil harder to make it taste as good.

you should email champion whey, they will send you a sample of their protein. that's what i did.

    to summarize:
follow a 40-40-20 daily meal plan.
try to get around 1g/lb of protein
    drink atleast 8-10cups of water.
get atleast 25-30g of fiber (eat more whole grain foods)
cut down on too much fruit and simple sugars
eat more comlex carbs like sweet potato, oatmeal
eat good fats like omega-3 contained in fish oil/flax seed etc.
    eat lean meats for protein
supplement with shakes (2-3scoops a day, so around 40-60g)

    as far as training goes:
lift heavy in the 4-6 rep range since inducing hypertrophy is useless when you are in a calorie deficit to lose weight
incorporate HIIT 2-3x a week with sessions lasting less than 20mins.

preworkout: eat complex carbs and 10-20g of protein an hour or so before.
postworkout: drink a shake (around 40-50g protein) with a piece of fruit and then an hour or two later eat a solid meal.

no need to follow any dumb diet plans or ridiculous training methods.

and remember there's no such thing as a toning workout. it's just an excuse for girls and girly men to lift light weights.

    77 scoops / 3 scoops = ~25 days for 42 dollars.

i usually try to drink 3 on the days i workout like 1 in the morning and 2 afterwards. and other days i just do 1 in the morning and 1 later on in the day. so that way it lasts me over a month.

taste wise, just ask for a sample from the company. i mean they are not digusting as people make it out to be. it's an acquired taste. you get used to it. most of the chocolate ones taste like nesquick or something.

ive heard really good things about NOW foods WPI. its 100% natural with no artificial sweeteners and its 100% WPI. i heard that the taste was pretty good and i think im going to try that next. its 71.50 for 10lbs on allstarhealth which is not a bad price at all. i have ON gold standard right now and i dont really like the flavor all that much. its not bad, but its just not that great. its really bland.

at most sams ive been too they sell 6 lbs bags of EAS 100% Whey for like $25 bucks, which is the cheapest price for decent quality protein by far. i dont think its the best quality you can get, but i think its comparable to any other protein out there. the chocolate flavor tastes really good, like 5x better than ON gold standard , which is the most popular whey product. i only mix it with water and it comes out tasting like chocolate milk. i cant overstate the taste, its really good.

bottom line is, theres no way you can beat that price!

[edit] i just checked the sams website and its $28 for a 6lbs bag.

Go pickup some of the Myoplex ready to drink shakes. All you have to do is open them and they are ready to drink. My favorite flavors are the chocolate and vanilla. I use them for meal replacements twice a day.

I couldn't imagine eating the protein crap as just a shake, I have to make a smoothie with it.

I use fairly common smoothie ingredients:

    ice
    fat free milk
    protein
(sometimes other supplements like creatine or something)
    fat free yogurt
    frozen berries

I get lazy though and don't make them as often as I should.

if you can stand the taste of myoplex, this is the best idea. I find it to be disgusting.

champion has a more richer taste i think compared to optimum, so keep that in mind. tell me how it goes.

you got plenty of options. if you workout, you def need protein afterwards within an hour.
if i were to rank the need for protein throughout the day ..
    post workout
    breakfast
before bed (but dont use whey here, use slow acting casien found in milk, cottage cheese etc. or use musclemilk etc)
    preworkout

I can use milk but there are quite a few dairy products that I cannot use that are probably excellent sources of nutrition. Things like cheese, sour cream, etc. I can eat milk, ice cream, etc. although I am staying away from most of it. I know cottage cheese and other dairy products contain some great proteins I am missing out on. :(

As you stated in another thread, that 40-40-20 regiment is hard to achieve but I'm trying. I am also trying to get the recommended amount of protein but I find that difficult without a protein supplement. Maybe once I find the right protein supplement and start using it regularly this won't be an issue.

So this is a good regiment to use to lose weight, build muscle, or both? Like I said my first priority is weight (fat) loss then muscle gain. I've heard it is hard
to accomplish both at the same time.

And this is a pre and post workout nutrtion guide, correct or at least what you do anyway.

Also, what foods should you stay away from. I know we had the discussion about fruit but I heard it was healthy, high in fiber and nutrients, etc. It turns out that it is not as good as I thought. So what are some that I should stay away from, even those that may appear to be healthy.

Ya you will be fine. Just do lil more carbs instead. like 45c-35p-20f, or even 50c-30p-20f

i won't say it's IMPOSSIBLE to lose fat and gain muscle because someone with super freaky genetics, or something can do it.

for a normal person, calorie surplus = weight gain (muscle and or fat). Provided you have a good workout where you create hypertropy, and are eating "clean" calories, that calorie surplus will be used to build muscle. All of it? no. it's humanly impossible to provide the exact amount needed to build muscle. so most people eat 250-500 over and hope most of it gets used to build muscle. rest becomes fat. and thats why bodybuilders do "bulking" and "cutting"

you are trying to lose weight. so you will need to be under what you need. so your body is not going to go, "oh i am not getting what i need daily, but let me build muscle anyway." it's like trying to save money when you're in debt. ;)

so that's why i said do strength training. rep range for that is 4-6. even though it's not really possible to build muscle, it's possible to get stronger during a cut. because your body is basically getting more "efficient" at lifting weights using what you already have.

i didn't say fruit was bad. of course i eat fruit everyday. i said don't put that in every single meal. there are other ways to get your fiber and nutrients.

In addition to protein, you need a complex carb post workout or you are really wasting your time.

My usual post workout shake is a combination of 1 scoop of ON 100% Whey, along with 1/2 cup of old fashioned oats. Put it in a blender along with 2 ice cubes and mix for a minute. Yum!

anyone see "The Science of Steriods" last night on the national geographic channel?

I really hated hearing from the doctors/scientists...a guy that doesn't have a very strict diet, and works out only a few times a week will absolutely blow away the most dedicated person in the gym when it comes to muscle gains.

oh well atleast my boys won't shrink.

not sure when it will air again.

Carbs post workout will not make you gain weight. 30 minutes to an hour post workout your muscles act like a sponge, and need carbohydrates to help refuel the energy stores that have been lost during the workout. Your muscles need the proper nutrients in order to repair and grow, otherwise what's the point?

There is a ton of info out there on this, here's the first thing that popped up on google: http://www.fitfaq.com/2004/12/post-workout-carbs.html

OK, this may also be a stupid question but what are complex carbs? What are good carbs and bad carbs? I've seen these terms used but am still a little hazy on what they mean and refer to.
