When I was in high school in the 80’s, Prestonwood (subdivision on NW side off of 249 and Grant) used to have a Christmas lights display that would be so massive it would regularly make CNN and other national news channels. There used to be a traffic jam going in and out of the subdivision to see them and you could turn off your headlights while driving because it was so bright. Every house looked like Clark Griswald’s. Each street had a theme.

Just wondering if they still do that. We were thinking about taking the nephews on Christmas Eve but with all the construction and social/economic change in that part of town, I’m not even sure if they do it anymore.

    Anyone know?

Unless it changed this year, I believe the answer is yes -- they still do it. I went as a kid and have taken my kids the past few years.

I remember my parents taking us as a kid and listening to the Rockets on the radio. We had a van with the big side windows. I sat in the back seat listening Gene and Jim call the game, at times my dad would turn down the radio so we could hear the music coming from some of the houses. How sweet it was...

They still do it, but I believe a lot of the streets don't go all out until right before Christmas to cut down on the traffic in the weeks leading up.

But yes, its still one of the best light neigborhoods around.

It’s that time again! The holidays are just around the corner and some of us are already getting excited about participating in the 30+ year tradition of Prestonwood’s Nite of Lites celebration.

For our new residents who don’t know, Prestonwood Forest has been spotlighted in all local newspapers (major and minor), all local television stations, The Travel Channel, and last year, our wonderful neighborhood was spotlighted on Fox News which broadcasts nationwide! That was quite an honor for all of us and now it’s up to each and every one of us to uphold the reputation that Prestonwood has obtained by being the “Christmas Lights Neighborhood”.

This year's Nite of Lites officially begins on Saturday, December 13th and will end on January 3rd. Judging on Saturday will begin around dusk. To be eligible for any of the great prizes that we have received for this year’s event, you will need to have your lights and displays ready by the time the judges start their rounds on Saturday evening. See below for lights on, lights off time table.

We know that putting out lights and displays is a lot of hard work. We also know that once the creation is finished, you want to show it off. We welcome you to start turning your lights on the first weekend of December but, please, follow the time table below. Following this schedule will help lessen the traffic flow late at night (when all the mischief occurs.) Furthermore, our extra security coverage is planned around the Nite of Lites time schedule.

Great news! It's very comforting to know that some things like this haven't changed. Can't wait to take the boys to see this and continue the tradition.

kpsta, yes, they take it very seriously. I had some friends that lived there in high school. One of them to this day likes to tell me that he lost his virginity inside the little gingerbread house in the middle of his cul-de-sac. Still not sure if I believe him or not.
