Let the Farce end now here's a solution.

GW Bush can be president on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday

Al Gore can be president on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

So that leaves Saturday, for which Bush can be president if anyone needs to be fried or can be decided by a weekly popular vote.

Only in America....do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.

    Wow Smeg,

You make the Presidency sound like a kid whose parents, Dubya and Gore, are fighting for visitation rights [IMG]

No we have consistent voting slips nation wide that are easy to read and fill out for all even the elderly and sick, amazing isn't it, we also have procedures in place for re-counts and we certainly don't have no college electoral voting system.

Heck, you don't even have a President to elect since Australia has a parliamentary system of government.

I suspect a lot of Americans would think it weird that your country (and a good many others) don't have the same separation between the Legislative and Executive branches. And I am certain that Australia has a Governor-General appointed by the Queen.

yeah paige we have a governor general which is really just a symbolic position that has no power.

Hopefully we will have a president soon.

I understand we different parliamentary system but i find it bizarre that the format of ballot papers is not consistent.

We are one of the few countries that has a separation in powers between the National Government and the State Governments. The Country has decided that each state will be responsible for their own elections.

Given the sheer number of elected officials and the differences in which officials are elected and how, etc. it's not surprising that there would be different ballots in different states. Different states have different needs and different ways they handle things.

It's weirder to me that there isn't standardization within a single state. The ballots are different in seemingly every county. The ballots that people in Randall County, Texas use are different than the ones the people in Tarrant County, Texas use. (We don't even have punch card ballots in Tarrant County. Our ballots are more like a scantron form where you complete a line with a marker).

But it's just another way where local control has won out over mandates from the higher levels of government. The thinking being that the officials closest to the people know better how to serve those people in these issues. Guidelines are issued, ballots are approved by both parties and go through a vetting process.

Standardization among 50 states and 225 million potential voters would be even more trouble than what we've got now.

People like to slam Bush's education record, but at least Texans know how to punch holes.
