    How many Minutes do you think Ming will have at his first year?

    Ming said in an interview that he will have 30 minutes at "the begining of the season." So he said "I will have plenty of time to adapt NBA. I am lucky than others (other rookies, Wang and Bateer).

    Does that mean the coach has given him some promise? Is that the need of marketing? Can he play so long time at the court?

    But the fact is: If he plays 30 mins/game at his first year, he can get a high stats. If Wang can get 30 mins/game, he is a 18 points, 7 rebounds guy.

    This is one of the most common dumb statements People make about under-minutes players from time to time: humm, he played only 2 minutes per game and avergaed 1 point, so he is an All-Star given 48 minutes to play per game!!

    I completely agree with that poster that if Wang got 30 minutes a game, his stats would improve dramatically. What harm is there in saying that? Wang has skills to pay the bills, but the Mavs are so deep he gets no opportunity to really shine.

    We hope Ming the next big thing, we need him compete with the best and be one of the best. How much does he need to do to avoid being labeled 'a bust', in his first season?

    Take a look at the first year stats of other players of the group we hope Ming to be listed:

    <table width="100%">
    <tr><td>Player</td><td>PPG</td><td>RPG</td></tr>
    <tr> <td> Big Dream</td> <td>20.6</td><td>11.90 </td></tr>
    <tr> <td>P. Ewing</td> <td>20</td><td>9</td></tr>
    <tr> <td>Zo Mourning</td> <td>21</td><td>10.3</td></tr>
    <tr> <td>D. Robinson</td> <td>24.3</td><td>12</td></tr>
    <tr> <td>T Duncan</td> <td>21.1</td><td>11.9</td></tr>
    <tr> <td>S O'Neal</td> <td>23.4</td><td>13.9</td></tr>
    </table>

    I don't you guys, but I will be disppointed if Ming cannot make 20/10 in his first year!!

    I guarantee you, from RIGHT THIS INSTANT, that you'll be dissapointed.

    With all the scorers we have, other than Francis, everyone, including Mobley, will struggle to get 20ppg. Forget the new rookie who can't play big minutes and has to adapt to the NBA.

    With Mo T, Griffin, Rice, and Mobley demanding shots, Ming will barely ever be the main man.

    I won't be dissapointed if francis' scoring average stays at a flat 20ppg, while increasing his assists to 7.7, and decreasing his rebounds to 5, while concentrating more on defense.

    If Wang got 30 min last season, he might average 10/5, but the opposite team would have gained more by taking advantage of his poor inside defense. If you think '10/5 per 30 min' is a 'dramastic improvement' over '5.6/2 per 11 min', this is fine, but it is the defense that have prevented Wang from getting more minutes.

    Do you think Ming can get 30 minutes at his rookie year? I found this information from a few of Yang Yi's articles. If it is true, maybe I can buy my flight to Houston now.

    W&S,

    I read Ming saying the '30 min', too, but I don't know it is something slipping to Ming's head at that moment, or he already got this promise from Houston, or the reporter just made it up. But I think if he can adjust well in his first couple of games, he can easily get 30 minutes even in the first season - we know Cato would not complain about sitting in the bench to see others do the work.

    windandsea,

    I know the questuion's not for me, but I think we can all agree that there's no way Ming can get 30 minutes. There are no extra PF or SF minutes, and if Cato plays a measly 20 minutes, that leaves only 28 for Ming. rest assured though, cato will play more than 20.

    What you can look at realistically is this:

    At the beginning of the season, he'll foul out a LOT. So expect 18 to 20 minutes. As the season progresses, while he regains his fitness and learns how to stay out of foul trouble, then probably he'll get 30 minutes. But that's probably around 50 games into the season.

    Asuuming he hits the rookie wall around that time, it doesn't look good.

    His average will probably be 22 minutes a game by season's end. But expect that to improve a LOT the following year.

    Did you just say that a Mavs player cannot get time because of his lack of defense?

    This is going to be the difference that will catapult us past the Mavs within 2 seasons. Ming and Griffin will be the defensive presences that the Mavs do not or will ever have.

    Francis 15pts a game? You must not watch too many Rocket games. Francis will easily average 22 this year.

    I really don't see him getting more then 20 or so. He gets nearly all of his points in the flow of the game and demands the ball in the position to score pretty rarely. He is content to let Cuttino handle this and I wouldn't be too surprised if Steve went down from 20 this season.

    My prediction?

    Yao will have average more points, blocks and rebounds than Cato.
