If Ilgauskas will be with Cleveland for the long term, Boozer is likely on his way to Utah

This much is known about the Carlos Boozer ordeal in Cleveland: He is expected to sign an offer sheet with the Utah Jazz on Wednesday.
The Cavaliers would have 15 days to match the six-year, $68 million contract.
After that, it's anybody's guess what the Cavaliers are going to do.
If they think they would be better off long term with Boozer on the roster, as compared to Zydrunas Ilgauskas, they might entertain trade offers for the 7-foot-3 center.

Moving Ilgauskas' $14.6 million contract would free up more than the necessary cap space to match the first year of Boozer's offer, which is thought to be about $10 million.

Ilgauskas is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2004-05 season. Rumors around the league say his agent could ask for a maximum contract from the Cavaliers.

The last time Cavaliers general manager Jim Paxson was faced with a similar dilemma, he traded point guard Andre Miller to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Owner Gordon Gund has twice reportedly nixed possible deals for Ilgauskas - once at the trade deadline for Portland's Rasheed Wallace and again on draft day in a three-way affair with Indiana and Dallas.

If the Cavaliers come to the conclusion that the chances of Ilgauskas staying in Cleveland beyond next year are slim, then maybe they should trade him now. If they decide Boozer shouldn't be brought back under any circumstance, then maybe they open contract negotiations with Ilgauskas now.

To bring Boozer back to the team would be difficult, especially after he reportedly broke an oral agreement to re-sign with the Cavaliers. He became a restricted free agent on July 1 and agreed to sign with Utah last Thursday.
In Sunday's edition of the Salt Lake Tribune, a source close to Boozer said Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said the forward was nothing more than a "high-energy player." Silas didn't return a phone message on Sunday seeking comment.

The Cavaliers might have to swing a trade in order to find a replacement for Boozer if they choose not to match his offer. The free-agent market is drying up quickly.

So much for bringing forward Al Harrington to Cleveland. Forward Stephen Jackson reportedly will sign a six-year contract worth $44 million with Atlanta and then be traded to the Pacers for Harrington, who has two years and $13.3 million left on his contract.

The Pacers had shown some interest in Cavaliers swingman Luke Jackson before the draft. However, after being selected with the 10th pick in the June 24 draft, he couldn't be traded by the Cavaliers until December.

In other developments:
Suns power forward Antonio McDyess has supposedly agreed to a contract with the world champion Detroit Pistons.

Knicks forward/center Vin Baker, represented by LeBron James' agent, Aaron Goodwin, recently had heart surgery, according to the New York Post. Bringing him to Cleveland might be a risky move.

Grizzlies power forward Stromile Swift is still on the open market, but Memphis has said it would match any reasonable offer for him.

Wizards power forward Etan Thomas is rumored to be headed to Milwaukee.

Celtics forward/center Chris Mihm might be a case of "been there, done that." The Cavaliers traded him to Boston last December. A return to Cleveland might not be the right fit.

The Lakers' Stanislav Medvedenko could be a possibility for the Cavaliers, but the 6-10, 250-pound forward is not a strong rebounder.

The Cavaliers could have interest in one of the Rockets' three power forwards - Juwan Howard, Maurice Taylor or Clarence Weatherspoon.

 

I thought the whole point of having two exceptions was the ability to get involved in some of these multi team trades.

Shaq heading to Miami
Crawford heading to NY

You would think the Rockets could have offered to "help" these teams make their trades easier.

Yes, I am getting frustrated about this.

What worries me most, is the possibility of the Rox throwing the entire exception at Fisher, or taking on Snow's contract.

 

I guess we could take Big Z...I'd rather take Battie and McInnis..and sign Eric Williams.

 

I'm with you on this. I would much rather run out there with Lue & Gaines than to add an over-priced role player. But that is just me.

As good as CD is at keeping trades from being leaked, maybe there is already something but wont be made public till wednesday. The whole Antonio Daniels trade prospect came totally out of the blue, so maybe there is someting like that just waiting to be let out of the bag.

 

we do not need Z - and his 14 million dollar contract (we already have a better center in Yao)

Battie or Williams would be nice fits, but I doubt they would offer McInnis (since he takes the PG burden off of Lebron quite nicely)

 

Articles out now are saying Boozer was unhappy with coach Paul Silas. With the mudslinging going on, I doubt they'll try to keep Boozer. They'll let that backstabbing SOB walk and get absolutely nothing in return for it. He and his agent pulled a ROYAL screwjob on the Cavs.

 

The Cavs can have Taylor for Battie and a S&T Eric Williams. Man would that be a sweet trade for the Rockets or what?

Taylor's cap number is around 8M and Battie is at 4.8. The Cavs could S&T Williams for something around 4M a year. I think he would take that.

 

One thing nobody mentions is that the Cavs tried to screw Boozer, they tried to get him for cheap now instead of paying him big bucks after next season, and that plan backfired.

 

well the Cavs got their moneys worth out of him for 2 years.. and I can see where Boozer would want to get paid now instead of a few more years down the line. I think any close offer and Boozer goes back to the Cavs but Utah just offered too much money.

What's the fascination with Eric Williams?

I know he's a great locker room presence and a good defender but in all honestly, unless he signs for the vet minimum how is he worth it? What can he do that Adrian Griffin can't?

 

How about a 3-way with Boston sending Ilgauskas to Boston, a resigned Chris Mihm and Jeri Welsch and Cav's Dajuan Wagner to Houston; and Mo Taylor and T-E to Cleveland -- or something like this that works trade dollar wise?

 

They ARE NOT letting Boozer walk.

If anything they will move cap room, resign boozer, then create a S&T so they are not left empty handed. They could probably get some quality players for Boozer in a S&T.

 

All those moves would leave them empty handed anyway, they trade away depth to get Boozer, sign him, then trade him for more depth. What's the point in that? That guy's gone, they'll focus on finding a decent replacement rather than struggling with a scenario like that. It's their own fault anyway, yeah Boozer we'll decline the option because you've been underpaid these past 2 seasons, then we'll sign you to a deal that underpays you for 6 years. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense for Boozer, doesn't it?

 

How so? Boozer and his agent approached the Cavaliers. They asked for a new deal (rather than take the $695,000 he was due for the upcoming season). They knew the best the Cavs could offer was the MLE over 6 years ($40 million). Both parites apparently agreed to this. Cleveland tried to accomodate Boozer NOT the other way around.

 

I think the fasination is that Battie (backup center) and Williams (a JVG kind of Forward) would be a better fit for the Rox and better use of fund$ than Mo T and his salary cap crippling contract -

I don't anyone thinks we HAVE to trade for them or we will be in the lottery... they are better role players for the $$

 

That deal would of underpaid him for 6 more years! They could of paid him 700K for next season, then extended him to a deal like the one Utah gave him, but that would of cost more so they decided to take the foolish chance that no one would offer more than a MLE for him. They played with fire and they got burned!

 

and the cavs did it to max boozer out with the mle, which in time would save them millions, and in the case of the jazz contract, around 28 million.

 

Man, Boozer is full of it. The guy continues to lie. Convenient how he suddenly doesn't like Silas now that he has a big payday and doesn't want the Cavs to match it so that he'll have to deal with LeBron and some other angry Cavs.
