I keep getting these pop ups that appear even if i don't have a browser turned on. It's driving me mad. I used some anti-spyware program(forgot which one cuz it obviously sucked) and had no results. Would someone let me know how to rid myself of these parasites.

    Get ad-aware from lavasoft.

Its free and should be able to get rid of them.

If its a pop-up that looks like a message box, not an explorer window, you need to turn off windows messenger (not windows instant messenger).

there is a way to do it, just searc for it on google and it will tell you somewhere.

the google toolbar is good. other people say to use mozilla firebird as your browser cuz it has one built into it which you can customize.

It is just a message box. I have DSL so my internet is on all the time(i'm far too lazy to turn it off). I get dings in the middle of the night(or while playing games...uggggg very annoying). I guess i'll look for windows messenger on my google toolbar. Thanks......

do you have a firewall up? a lot of times that crap happens cuz ppl go to the IP and not specifically to you.... if you have XP, there's a firewall in the system, you just have to make sure it's turned on.

Turn off the Windows messenger service. It's in Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Services

Vengeance left a little out there. You double click Messenger from the list of things.

    Startup Type should be Disabled
On Service Status you should click Stop.

I'm pretty sure thats all you have to do. If I'm wrong somebody please correct me

No Prob Darrin... I know how annoying those get. I was using a free AOL 3 month trial while I was in Connecticut and every minute one of those would pop up.

    That's the ticket.

    That should stop it.

Make sure you have a firewall up as well.

    You're right Angel02 -- I forgot that last step.

Anyhow, if you also want to get rid of popups in web browsers, use Mozilla Firebird. The greatest browser ever :)
