Rice left the KNICKS because he wanted more playing time, and JVG wasn't giving him time. Now guess who's back??? Thats right, JVG!!! What would be sad is if JVG starts to play BOKI more than RICE. It could happen............
Who cares? Rice is in a contract year anyhow. He wont be with us much longer.... And why is it sad if Boki plays more minutes than Rice? He's our future 3 anyways.... Rice is done.
perhaps this increases the chances that we will turn Rice's valuable, expiring contract into a (more) productive player.
Two things: (1) Van Gundy only benched Rice because he played the SAME position as the best two players on the Knicks at the time (Sprewell and Houston). That Ewing trade never made much sense for the Knicks. On the Rockets, Rice is not just the only veteran on the team, he is also their best three-point threat. JVG wouldn't bench that kind of weapon, even if they didn't get along personally. (2) I really don't think the Rockets are even looking to trade Glen Rice. If I were Les Alexander, I wouldn't trade him. Rice's HUGE contract comes off the books next summer. This season, the Rockets are WAY over the salary cap and are seriously flirting with the luxury tax threshhold. They have Rice, Taylor, and Cato making big salaries; this is the first year of Francis's MAX extension; Posey won't come dirt cheap as a free agent; and other players like Yao, Griffin, and Moochie also make good money. If the Rockets traded Rice's contract for a player with a long-term deal (the only real possibility for a Rice trade), the Rockets would be stuck over the luxury tax for the next decade. That would cost Les MILLIONS in revenues. I just don't think it's worth it to him to do such a deal. After the serious commitment he's shown these past few years--and now shelling out major dough for JVG--we can hardly blame him if he wants to avoid the luxury tax.
WHO GIVES A CRAP?!? Who actuallly listens to Mr. Old Man Past His Time WHO MAKES FREAKIN 9.2 MILLION A YEAR for BEING INJURED! Man.......forget him! If Rice wants to leave...then let him leave and tell him to take his huge contract with him! I'm sorry Glen....you were a great veteran and nice guy and nice Wolverine.....but who cares! Are you going to go on strike?!? I know.....times have changed. Maybe Glen likes him now. Glen doesn't even deserve any playing time anyways. We have James Posey hopefully, Bostjan Nachbar, AND Terence Morris. Glen just needs to spend time behind the scenes and teach them how to play......just how Steve Smith, Steve Kerr, Danny Ferry, Kevin WIllis, and David Robinson help their younger players. Glen Rice...if he wants to get traded......trade him! He was a good player this year and shot like 50% from behind the arc this year. He made a bunch of 3's this year. I loved it. But he's just too old and can't play defense. And he makes 9.2 million a year. He's just too old. Very good career. But no more playing time for you!
Rice will most probably be traded this offseason. At least, those were the plans before Rudy stepped down.
There is a reasonable possibility that might happen. Miami's the only known team that's pretty serious about dumping salaries now, but there will probably be a couple more. The fact that his contract expires in a year might give us a shot who has more value with a longer deal - of course it will depend on how much we like the guy in question and the length of his contract, but we still could get the better end of a deal. I liked a lot of what Rice said last year, a veteran presence who now is a very streaky shooter still has some value. The luxury tax and rampant free agency has made logical decisions a lot less about what happens on the court in a given season. Anyway, I'm hoping something good might happen here.
if Jeff Van Gundy is in here by Friday I hope we see some trades either Friday night or Saturday Morning.
Ill second the second point. After the all-star break Rice did a great job..Do we keep him or trade him for E.Jones or Brian Grant... who cares? But we are probably better off keeping him, hoping he can repeat last years late success and save the cap space for later.
Totally agreed. Don't be surprise if JVG won't play Rice at all, if I'm the coach, I will play Boki more than Rice. It's that obvious.
That might be the ONE Good thing that he might do.If it was upto me I wouldnt have RICE on the Team. PS. If we use Rice in a Trade we need something better than Grant, we need a player that can be part of out team for years.
Rice probably won't get traded till early or midseason, it takes the bite out of his salary for t he acquiror, and while he has value, only those 4-5 teams that are planning a serious free agent rush (and don't mind adding dead weight to their locker room and thus are out of the playoff race) are going to want him.
