I have a friend that needs 3000 dollars. It's for an emergency, but she's the type that's always in financial trouble. I've known her a decade, so there's a fair chance I might I have to see judge Judy. She does have a job.

So my question is, would you lend money to someone who's a good friend and needs it, but you're not sure you're getting it back OR that you might have to take the to court?

    Nope, wouldn't do it.

    Money can ruin friendships.

Ask her what she is willing to do for that money.

If shes a close friend, then I would probably do it, but I wouldn't expect the money back. But then again I never lent more then $200 to a friend.

When I "lend" any friend money, I'm working on the assumption that I'll never see that cash ever again.

Yea, I do that with a few hundreds, but this is a lot of money. I'm conflicted because she's a good friend, and really needs it. I'll probably make her sign some agreement, but I would hate to take her to court if it comes down to it.

Understandable. But can't you just lie and say you don't have that money to lend right now?

she's financially irresponsible. by lending her money, you're also being financially irresponsible. think about what got her into this mess in the first place. she doesn't know how to manage money, but you're going to lend her some of yours? kiss that $3000 goodbye. and if you sue, good luck with court costs and wasted time.

Just say let me think about it, don't return any calls or text, then a month later be like "hey I got swamped with stuff, you still need the money?"

Hopefully by then the situation is settled and she doesn't need the money.

He looks like a good guy and he doesn't lose a dime.

my policy would be to be prepared to lose the money forever, and when the person pays you back it is a bonus...

three thousand would be out of the question.

i loaned $800 to a roommate once and he paid me back a year later $900

Like I said, I've known her for 10 years. I wouldn't think twice if she were just a causal friend.

It's medical in nature so she can't really wait.

Like co-sign? I have the money and I would be responsible to the bank anyways if she defaulted anyways right? She has bad credit.

it's clear you care about her.

are you prepared to take the hit?

if you are helping her medical situation, consider yourself a good samaritan, but I wouldn't count on her paying you back...

I'll just do it and make her sign an agreement. Hopefully it won't come down litigation.
