I was on my way to work. I still had a good 5~10 minutes to be on time
    and
I was about 2 minutes from the job. No Big deal
    Until I hit the UTURN
The police basically were under the Freeway Waiting
    [Hillcroft and 59]
They pulled everyone over to check Vitals
    [license, registration, License, stickers etc]

I had everything but that is not the point
I was detained and ended up a couple of minutes Late

It may not be illegal but it should be
Random Shake downs of the citizentry
Sounds like something that happens in those 'repressive' countries

    just irratating

I've seen police doing that before.

But usually they only pull over those without a seatbelt, since that is something they can physically see and be 100% sure of.

They can't just randomly pull people over for insurance and license checks, can they?

59 and Hillcroft is a high drug and prostitution area with the hourly motels and strip clubs nearby. Checkpoints are not illegal as long as the stops aren't random (they do dwi checkpoints too) and if you don't have your license and insurance you're sol cause that allows them to search.

They love camping out in the uturn overpasses, especially southwest freeway. They got me awhile ago for not having my plate in the front.

Got to hit their quota I guess.

F those cops that are lazy and don't do their job. They can't stop real crime so they have to look for small petty crime like no license, registration, ect.

So the public's safety and well being is not worth a couple minutes of your time? That is VERY selfish of you. Heck, there could be more to the story that you are conveniently leaving out. I RESPECT police officers and understand how difficult their jobs are. If this measure is something they think will make their job easier and protect both the public and themselves, then I support them. What irks me is people just looking for an excuse to complain and whine and not recognizing the motives for police to pull people over in the first place -- SAFETY.

What? I don't think the public's safety and well being has anything to do with being randomly stopped to check license, registration, ect. Seriously, it's not going to make me feel any safer if they give people tickets to people who aren't up to date with their vehicle papers. Their motive has little to do with safety, and more to do with meeting their quota. If they were so concerned with our safety, Houston's crime rate wouldn't have increased so much over the past years.

Yes, there are cops that really want to help and make the city safer. Then, there are also other cops who could care less, racially profile drivers or even use their power to their advantage. I'm sick of hearing people talk about cops like they are saints. Theres always bad apples around. Situations like these make it seem as if our freedom is getting took away little by little.

A cop I was talking to awhile ago admitted law enforcement is not like it was before, where it was the good guys trying to catch the bad guys. He admitted it's more like a business, they got overheads and budgets and the need to get funds to feed the machine. So if they can't meet budgets through tax payers money, they'll get them through the tickets and court processing fees.

    How long was the detainment?

If you were detained for more than 15 mins, I think you would have a legitimate gripe. As a law abiding citizen, 5 minutes or so shouldn't be a big deal.

exactly! Why should some outdated piece of paper titled the constitution get in the way of random searches of the populace! The people complaining about this are probably terrorists.

I can't believe someone would complain about being pulled over for no reason and not realize it is for their own good. Who are the American people to criticize the motives of those who hold power? Get back in line you complaining, tax paying, constitution upholding, government critiquing citizenry! You are probably the same people who are advocating against legislating morality!

    Down with the people!

    I feel ya' Trader!

actually, i think it's a lot more hazardous hiding under the freeway and suddenly stopping folks randomly in the middle of traffic. if they really want to protect, go freaking patrol the neighborhoods.
