I agree. It may be a minor bug, and in the end everything will be peachy, but a day of downtime for millions of people is unacceptable, especially when the system is designed to prevent games from being playable if the trophy data cannot be accessed. Want to play Heavy Rain? Sorry, can't; PSN is down.
Heavy Rain is dependent on PSN? I just hope they fix this by the time Battlefield comes out tomorrow.
Heavy Rain (and most newer games) connect to PSN to sync the trophies up. If that connection fails, you cannot play. Theory is that if you disconnect your PS3 from the Internet entirely, you will be able to play it still (without trophies), but I haven't tested it. It might only work if your save is in that state to begin with.
I think it will work if you start the game for the first time (have zero game data on your PS3) without an Internet connection, disabling the trophies entirely when installing the game. Otherwise, how would someone without an Internet connection ever play the PS3? But very few people would be in that situation.
people have already tried to see if a clean HDD will fix the problem. It doesn't. the only thing that works is the battery unplug. The problem is the OS reading the internal clock to have an invalid date.
Clean HDD + no Internet connection? (not just no PSN, but no Internet at all) That doesn't make sense, then. Why would games require an Internet connection to be playable? The error is obviously related to the PSN and having trouble synching with the invalid date. I see no reason it shouldn't work with zero internet connection and trophies completely deactivated from the game data.
If that is true why would an offline ps3 ever have a problem. It is not just psn. Some people never connect the ps3 to the internet.
Luckily I haven't played mine in a week. I did, however, go downstairs and immediately yank the power cable out so my 2 year old daughter doesn't inadvertently turn it on. As long as it's all roses by March 16 (God of War 3 day), and I don't lose my trophies, I'm fine.
Were they offline when the game data was installed? Are trophies deactivated? Earliest reports (gamespot forums, kotaku) were that completely offline PS3's were unaffected and worked. I guess those reports have changed. If it is indeed a firmware error with the system clock, it still begs the question why the system clock matters if trophies are disabled and the system is disconnected from the internet? What is the game checking the system clock for? Why is the error code only given when attempting to connect to PSN? I think there's a ton of conflicting information out there, I just try to go with whatever is most logical based on my knowledge of how these sorts of things work.
Well, if it isn't resolved within the next 24 hours or so, it will turn into a big deal [for me]. Otherwise, I'm not that concerned at the moment. I think it stinks, but I rarely even use my PS3. That'll change when GoW3 and FFXIII arrive, though. And if anything prevents me from playing FFXIII, I'm going to break down and nerdrage. I bought it for the PS3 (first time to buy a non-exclusive on the PS3) for a reason. Don't **** it up, Sony.
See! You are the problem. Nobody cares about YOUR trophies! Let me guess, you put a loud exhaust on your car and think the ladies drip everytime they hear it? Paleeeeeez.
Wow what a rip. I've always had my ps3 to start up not logged into PSN. I know it's down but I just tried to play Darksiders, an entirely offline game. It's completely bogus that trophy data has to be checked online each time you play any game. It's these little interdependencies Sony sneaks in that really grinds my gears.
I'm making fun of the year... I read the thread... I know it's the PS3's fault. I wasn't "FAIL"ing the poster with that image. I am saying Sony should take us back to the future. I have a "fattie" from Moes Tavern 19 Mart, too... so I haven't turned it on...
