Anyone who has seen it...what did you think? Personally, I thought it was the best adventure movie I have seen in a long, long time. Impeccable casting, a fun storyline, good, original and well choreographed fight scenes with plenty of good humor thrown in. Oh, and the score is outstanding. Anyone else seen it?
Raven, I haven't seen the movie but is it just me or does Johnny Depp just look like he was born to play a pirates role. At least I got that sense in the previews.
Depp was great...and he looks like he's having the time of his life playing Sparrow. Solid movie. I'd recommend it to anybody.
It's a must see movie. Depp should win an Acedemy Award much the same as Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York. Kiera Knightly is my new "most beatiful woman'. If you want to nit-pick, it is a little too long so pick an off-time to see it so you can skip the 14 Disney movie previews and still get a good seat. That way your butt won't be tired half way through the real flick. I'm not kidding you can show up 30 minutes later than the advertized start time. Also, the swordfight scenes are shot too dark. There are some classic Errol Flynn choreography but you can't really see it. However, it is a well crafted, well acted, classic that all movie fans should see. The Cursed Pirates are pretty dam scary, so I don't know how old the kids should be before they see it but there is no profanity or nudity (one nude Keira would have been cool though). You know I say that about the kids but these days I see parents bringing in babies in arms to things like Spiderman. Those kinds of villans would have warped me back when I was a kid. Hell I still have nightmares about Twight Zone. But kids these days grow up decapitating and disemboweling game characters all day long. I wonder about their compassion and empathy as adults but Pandora's Box is open and it can't be closed. On the other hand they will probably support my 'Crack for Seniors' health insurance savings plan, no problem . (Sayonara old dudes) Jeep
I second (or third or whatever) the Johnny Depp praise. He was outstanding as Sparrow, a role he was made for. One of my fears going into this movie was that it was going to be some special effects combined with fighting and cheesy one-liners ("You like pain, try wearing a corset"). When in fact that was not the case, and even the corset line was set up in a way as to make it not seem so cheesy. I just have to say it again, this was a bad ass movie. Way better than I expected. Everyone should go see it.
I saw this the day it opened, but when I first brought up the subject back when the trailer first came out, well people were quick to shoot the movie down. It was a damn good movie. People should watch the movie just to see Depp, he really did a fantastic job with his Kieth Richardsesque pirate. I'm already thinking about getting the DVD, very good and it was just a fun movie. Great blend of action, adventure, and comedy. The opening sequence when we first see Sparrow is one of the funniest scenes I've seen in movies in a good while. Kiera Knightly is indeed a british hottie with a body. She was the chick in Bend it Like Beckham BTW.
I came to that conclusion after "Bend it like Beckham". She looked better in that movie. And she's like 18 too. Just barely legal.
Is it better than or as good as Roman Polanski's Pirates? That, IMO, is the bench mark against which all other pirate movies must be judged. I think I'll go see it tonight just to see for myself.
It was a lot of fun, but to be honest i could have done without the supernatural angle...Adjusted and enjoyed, and Depp was great. Sword play was fun, and Ms. Knightly was eminently watchable...had not seen her before, and she was on screen about a minute before I nudged my friend and whispered " Who is that?" Bloom's brief impersonation of Depp's mannerisms was very accurate, and very funny.
Mostly crap, lots of commercials too. I'm just glad that the movie justs jumps right in, you see the title and then the movie starts, no production companies, or the Disney castle thing, just Pirates of etc. and then the movie starts.
I'm totally going to see this movie tonight. I'm hoping for another pleasant surprise, a la Terminator 3. I'll of course be making the requisite comparisons to Cutthroat Island after the movie (good or bad). Thing is, I actually liked Cutthroat Island (I own the DVD). It isn't good, but it isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Tons and tons of action, and the pirate battle at the end is damn cool. Plus, the score to that movie is literally top 3 of all time to me. It's a shame that CI's massive bomb at the box office put Carolco out of business (who just recently came back as "C2" and made T3). How was Geoffrey Rush in PotC? I heard he was pretty good...
Geoffrey Rush was excellent. The guy always becomes his character. He pulls the pirate villian off without a hitch. He and Depp both deliver the goods.
one word describes this movie: fun, lots of it acting and plot aren't half bad, but it's all about a fun tale
I saw it and T3 on the same night, and I actually liked Pirates better. Good story and you get to watch Knightley for two hours. What could be better?
