I have a slight pinch nerve condition that comes and goes and usually last for 2 weeks or so. Does anybody have a good way of managing this? Does Vioxx work well? The discomfort is severe enough to make me stay awake.
I took vioxx for a herniated disc that was slammed against my sciatic nerve. Didn't do diddly. Ask a doctor...
In contrast to DoD's experience Vioxx did the trick for me. I had a herniated disk that piched my sciatic nerve to the point that I couldn't get out of bed. Now I should add that I did go to the hospital where they gave me a shot of moraphine(sp?) for the pain, but the only anti-inflamitory I got was Vioxx. I stayed off my back and took that 3 times a day and I havn't a problem since.
What kind of pinched nerve? I had sciatica from a herniated disc and it went away after six months or so. I only took nuprin or something like that.
A chiropractor fixed my three slipped discs I had from a car wreck in 1990. That, and some advil. About six visit within a two week period, then one a month for six months as maintainence or until I felt better... anyway, it worked. But you gotta watch it. Some D.C.'s are whack jobs. I have some friends who swear by accupuncture for this sort of thing too.
You should go see a doctor. He may recommend, among other things, depending on where it is and how serious it is: rest, anti-inflammatories, corticosteroid injections, splints, physical therapy, surgery.
Funny how there is a thread about this as when I got up this morning, everything was fine. Then I got into the shower and my whole upper right back went crazy. I don't know if it is spasms or a severe pull or what but my God, it is hurting! Oh and for hkomives - I would try to go see a chiropractor or a masseuse and see how that goes first.
Okay, I just got done lying down for an hour or so. I would recommend using a heating pad or if you don't have one, getting one. Turn that sucker up on as high as it will go and let that thing touch your skin (that is important - don't have it touch your shirt) for about 15 minutes or so (however long you can stand it). Also something helps that gives immediate relief to me (but I don't know if it will for you) is to lie on your bed but do it width-wise. Then stretch your arms out as far as you can and hold that for several seconds. My back is feeling better now and I am going to continue to work on it throughout today.
Ok, an FYI and background on my info : If it is your back, go see a doctor before anything else - heck, if it's anything where the pain is recurring, go see a doctor. Yes, before trying home remedies, chiropractors, etc. Why? Because if the problem has to do with nerves or your spine, you may be sitting on a timebomb while the condition continues to degenerate and you're just temprarily fixing the immediate symptoms. Eventually none of your remedies will work and you may have irreversible damage. I had a herniated disc in my back, but I didn't know what the problem was. It just hurt like hell. I couldn't walk more than 10 feet without it starting to hurt so bad I had to sit down. I could only sleep in one position. If I moved out of that position, I'd wake up screaming in pain. I had thought that the herniation was actually just a muscle pull and that I'd get through it. That was until I felt my leg getting a bit weaker. That's when I went to see the doc. He then referred me to a neurologist who said it was a nasty herniation. I should've seen the doc immediately instead of assuming it was a muslce pull (which I've had before in the same general area).
The pain ranges from the back of my neck to my right shoulder, right arm , forearm , tingling sensations in my finger tips. no problems on my left side. I could only sleep on my back when problem occurs.
Thanks kindly for your suggestions DOD. How did you fixed your condition or managed it? Are you ok at this time?
I basically like to shy away from life changing and barbaric treatments, I kinda want easy fixes if possible.
I waited for a couple of months at the doctor's suggestion to see if it would get better. He had originally said that from looking at the MRI scans, the sciatic nerve was really badly slammed by the herniated disc. He said "you can either live with this pain, which I don't know how you can even walk around on that thing, or we can do surgery". He went on to say "let's see if it does clear up by itself, but I doubt it will with a herniation that severe". He added that if I noticed a weakening in the leg that hurt, it was a sign that the sciatic nerve in that leg was starting to die. Well we waited and I started noticing a weakening, so I had surgery. I still have a slight weakness in my left leg that's getting better, but it takes a while for damaged nerves to heal. But there was no way I could live with the pain I had. Like I said, walking for more than about 10 feet and I almost blacked out because of the pain. Go see a doctor... they'll know better than anybody else. It could be just a muscle problem, but it could be much worse, and nobody here can tell you what the problem is, muchless give you a remedy for it. kryten128 offers good advice. You may only need to do simple things to relieve the pain. I'm more worried about you just sitting around doing "home remedies" without even knowing what the problem may be. Good luck.

The treatments you are most likely to receive are not barbaric or life changing - quit dilly-dallying and go to a doctor. If the nerve is pinced in the spinal cord, then Vioxx (anti-inflammatory) might help. If Vioxx doesn't work, they give you steroid injections - this could go either way - I've had quite a few that had to inject into the site itself, which is more painful, but the doc will prolly just give you a shot in the arm, just like most any other shots you've ever gotten. Either will be a great help in 24-48 hours, MAX. Splints and physical therapy are hardly barbaric or life changing, but may be a more longterm treatment IF you have a serious enough case. and I highly, HIGHLY doubt you'll need surgery.
