Yesterday I saw an article about Google Picasa being available for Linux. That prompted me to find out what Picasa was. I downloaded Picasa 2 for Windows XP yesterday and played with it for about an hour this evening.

This program is totally amazing! I've been wanting something like it for years. This thing found every photograph and video on my PC and I was able to label virtually everything in a timely fashion. Trips to China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Vienna, etc; my sons 7th, 8th & 9th birthday party photos; blah blah blah. It was sickeningly easy and very very fast. You can create slide shows and other stuff I haven't played with yet.

Have I been missing out on a program type that has been available for a while or has Google come out with a new killer application? This has made my weekend. I'm gonna tell everybody I know about this. Are there superior photo management programs available? Please educate me.

I don't think they actually created the program, they just bought it (like many of their recent programs that they have been coming out with lately).

But I agree, Picasa is great photo album tool. I spent a good hour using the Cronological tool to basically relive my freshman year in college. The photo editing tools are also pretty nice, and the whole program runs very smoothly.

My only grief with it is that when you edit a photo, it doesn't automatically change the orginal photo. It is only edited when you open the program, and you have to export it to find your new photo.

If you're into more photo editing programs, try paint.net (You can find it at Downloads.com). Its a very Photoshop Lite, basically just the bare esentials of the program, but it is a very good alternative to "Paint" that comes with Windows. Oh and it's free.

I've long known about the photo editing programs. It's the organizational tools of Picasa 2 that stand out to me.

I *LOVE* Picasa. There are other good organizational programs, but Picasa stands out b/c it's so easy to use, and free. The only thing I wish it could do is integrate better with flickr. But there are ways to make it work -- the "Hello" service is interesting, but sort of a pain.

I don't use Picasa a lot, but i've been impressed when I have tinkered with it.

What are these stealth marketing tactics you speak of? Are they specialized for Picasa or are they the typical Google target ads?
