Should Pete Rose be reinstated? Opinions please.... Mine: If MLB wants to reinstate him, fine. However, if they do, and Rose is elected to the Hall of Fame, then Shoeless Joe Jackson plus the other 7 Black Sox members should be reinstated as well, and Jackson should be elected to the Hall.
IF Pete stands up and admits what he did and admits it was wrong then I say let him in. But if Pete keep sdenying everything then I say keep the door shut until after he passes away. Don't give him the pleasure of going in until he admits what he did.
If Pete admits to betting on baseball, than why exactly should he be reinstated? A man admits to breaking the most sacred rule of sports, and then gets a free pass? Plus he signed an agreement to be banned from baseball, pretty much admitting his guilt. I don't think he ever deserves to be back in baseball. His alleged actions are a disgrace!
A resounding NO Gambling is the Golden Rule in Sports. The only argument, you can make for Rose is that he only gambled on Baseball as a manager. But even then he still can cause irrepairable damage to the Sport that made him. Athletes get in trouble for a lot of things, including murder, but as far as the sport is concerned, nothing damages the sport more than gambling. If you can't believe the players are trying to win, what is the point of watching. It is the one thing that can ruin a sport. And people have to remember this also, this guy had mob ties are at least bookies. So don't say there is no way Pete would have ever cheated, because the type of bookies he was dealing with could have put him in some very questionable situations.
At first I thought YES. As long as he didn't bet on baseball. Then I thought, MAYBE, given his accomplishments, -- as long as he didn't bet on games he was involved in. Now I have to say NO. Looks more and more that he bet on his own team. Sacred rule. I've always been a fan of Charlie Hustle, but he made his own bed here. PS I don't think Shoeless Joe etc are a good comparison in that they were banned from baseball before they had a chance to put up HOF numbers. I fully expect they would have had HOF career numbers, but as they didn't, justly or unjustly, in my opinion they should not get the nod.
I agree with you, however, Paul Hornung and Alex Karras were suspended for betting on NFL games and missed the entire 1963 season. Paul Hornung is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame. Should the NFL and MLB be held to different standards?
I disagree with you here. Look up Shoeless Joe's numbers and see how they compare with other HOF outfielders. They don't match Ruth, Mays, Aaron or Mantle, but they are very respectable and HOF worthy. My whole point is...if they are going to make Rose eligible for the HOF, then they have no reason not to make Shoeless Joe eligible as well.
The only thing I can say is that, Rose probably had more damaging evidence about betting on the Reds than the general public knows about. The same standard should hold true in football, but football isn't as against gambling as they would like us to believe. They know it drives much of its demand and audience numbers, I know that is different from players gambling on the sport, but I just think the NFL is in bed with Las Vegas in general.
I would make him eligible for the Hall of Fame but bar him from working for any MLB team. He's not to be trusted.
Looked up the numbers as you suggested. 1300 games over 13 seasons. Have to agree with you. I thought he had played less.
Absolutely not. And I wish the NFL would change their rules as well. Gambling, I don't care on which sport, can get you in trouble if you're a player or manager. You can't pay up, you might have to do something to make up for it-like a boxer taking a dive.
With the exception of Ty Cobb, there was not a better pure hitter than Shoeless Joe Jackson. And there was pretty good evidence that he really DIDN'T bet on the 1919 World Series, yet he got banned anyway. Talk about getting rooted...I have no sympathy for Rose compared to what Shoeless Joe had to go through (and still going through - well at least his descendants)
Screw Pete Rose, let's get Buck Weaver reinstated. He didn't gamble and I highly doubt the not telling officials what he knows would get him banned today.
He might as well be reinstated into the Hall of Fame. We have two former drug users as U.S. Presidents so why can't a cheat and gambler be in baseball of fame? If he admited it or not the proof was there. I say no.
Whoa, players who threw the World Series should be in the hall of fame? I could see an argument for Buck Weaver and even Joe Jackson (he probably wasn't smart enough to realize what he was signing), but the other guys actually did it. I think Rose should be reinstated, at least for membership to the hall. He is the all time leader in hits, you can't just leave that part out of baseball's annals.
what were his numbers in the series, Jackson might have taken the cash, but their is no way he threw the series Shoeless Joe should be in
I was actually referring to the six players who did throw the series, which should have been obvious when I pointed out Buck and Joe having an argument for being reinstated.
