I'll keep it short and simple (no cool stories here bro) Are they BS or something to look into (and by that I mean consult a professional/look into meds etc.)? Hopefully some of you guys have experience with this stuff. I really don't.
That is a broad topic. Personality disorders definitely exist. There are also many more people who exhibit tenancies towards personality disorders, but don't quite make it there. Edit: If it is an actual "personality disorder" (i.e. Histrionic Personality Disorder as opposed to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), it is heavily ingrained into your being and will be very difficult (not impossible) and unpleasant to fix. Be prepared for more than just some medication if you want to really deal with the problem.
Nahhhhh. I'm not that crazy (yet). Just self-diagnosed myself as paranoid/histrionic/borderline. Or something like that. Basically I can't trust people, am always on guard and I'm on an emotional roller coaster most days. (Probably why I'm asking this question to anonymous Internet users rather then people I know) It's not an emergency though, but it has affected some parts of my life before. Lately though, it's getting worse and I've decided screw it, if this can get better I'll try to make it better. hmm...I guess I can say I'm sure they exist as well...but I'm wondering more whether or not it warrants getting a professional and going through psychotherapy or meds or whatever else there is out there or if it's just over-hyped and you can work it out yourself. And if one were to get help on this, where would one start? I don't consult a GP or family doctor regularly. Should I just find a random psychologist and walk on in?
Yeah i would try to get a consultation from a psychologist... you may not consult a gp regularly but if there is one you have seen you can go ahead adn ask them to refer you to one.
it's not the the talking to yourself that's considered a possible symptom to any potential disorder... many people do it gather their thoughts when dealing with an overwhelming concern... work out solutions for burdensome problems that no one but themselves can solve... vent without having someone to vent to... etc. it's when you're not aware that you actually talk to yourself.. or when something starts to talk back... that makes it something that you might want to seek professional help for...
A psychologist usually drifts towards prescription drugs. A counselor tries different methods before recommending a psychologist. Some things are not chemical and can be handled with cognitive therapy. Even with drugs, recovery usually means a mix of solutions. Ultimately, the professional help you get, you'll have to trust and buy into for any hope in progress. It doesn't mean they'll be right either
Serious stuff. I cant stay the same person for more than an hour..... Really takes a toll on my relationships.... Notice the "s".
Borderline personality disorder -- you'll know something is wrong with you if you have it -but you may not be able to figure out exactly what it is without professional help.
They're very real and can cause very serious complications in all aspects of life. Some cases require meds and years of cognitive therapy to deal with while some cases are as simple as figuring out how to change your perspective or look at things from another angle before you have a negative emotional reaction. Go talk to a doc. No harm, no foul. Source: me, with four years working inpatient adolescent psych.
Alright, thanks a lot guys...CF is always good for quality jokes and advice. Spreadin the reps... Based on advice here and elsewhere, I've decided I'm definetly going to see a counselor on Tuesday, see where that leads and if it leads to a psychologist, I'll try to hook myself up with one. Hopefully I can deal with this crap and get it done with. And no Brightside, I don't have a second account.
Just to clarify - A Psychiatrist is an MD and has the power to prescribe drugs, which they usually do. A Psychologist is not an MD, and can't prescribe drugs. In my experience they tend to congregate together. Usually if you have a problem that needs therapy, you visit the psychiatrist he diagnoses, prescribes drugs as needed, and then hands you off to the psychologist/therapist (who usually charges much less per hour).
Good for you. It takes a lot of courage to do what you're doing, so mad props to you for that. Keep us posted if you like.
There are no medications for personality disorders. Personality disorders can predispose someone to having psychological disorders down the road, but the personality in and of itself is not pathologic. But psychotherapy can help you understand anything about your self.
I've seen it go the opposite direction as well where the psychologist will recommend a visit to the psychiatrist for further evaluation in regard to the diagnosis and/or meds so that counseling/talk-therapy can progress. And Northside: I can recommend a PhD psychologist if you like. Shoot me an email at my user name here at yahoo dot com if you'd like to discuss it further.
