i've got a pc that according to the specs uses PC2100 DDR SDRAM DIMMs. see link.

    http://www.memorystock.com/memory/CompaqPresario6410NX.html

i was wondering what would be the consequences of adding a 512 MB PC3200 stick along with the PC2100. some googling said it would be ok. but i just need my clutchfans confirmation. :)

    TIA.

none really, it'll just only perform at 2100 instead of 3200.

What OS are you running? I've been told that XP is picky with RAM and if the specs don't match you could have potential problems.

    real world experience says otherwise.

Ive never had an issue with XP not liking RAM, and Ive mixed and matched ever since it came out.

Macula, Dave is correct, the RAM will only run at the speed of the slowest one.

The ram will run at the same speed as your fsb unless we're talking about hypertransport boards. Anyway, it's possible to run your old slow ram out of spec and be o.k.

Considering you're not talking about overclocking your processor, and changing your fsb, your ram will be running at the same speed as before. If you're adding ram, you might see a speed boost. If you're swapping sticks, you won't see a difference.

awesome. i'm on the pc right now with the new ram. there's definitely a speed boost. got a bit worried though. this is the second time i rebooted after the installation. the first time, the pc froze when i tried to open firefox. the first time its done that in about a month. thought it wasn't gonna work. hopefully, no more hiccups.
