Does anybody have a recommendation for where to take a sick PC?

I had my PC in last week to a repair shop. They found nothing wrong, but my problems still persist.

The problem in a nutshell is that I am losing connection to my primary master IDE HDD (but not my secondary master HDD). I had the HDD checked out and there appears to be no problems there. My next guess is that the IDE controller is fried. I suspect that I will need a new motherboard isnce the IDE maybe integrated therein. If this is the case, I would rather not replace the existing MB with like kind. I would want my PC repair shop to steer to toward a more reliable MB.

    :(

    Hi,

    1 - what kind of processor/mobo?
2 - can you RMA the mobo?
3 - have you tried an IDE controller? For ~$15, you can get a HD IDE controller that runs off a PCI slot. Might be a cheap solution. I'll check if i have a spare one lying around when I get home.

not to be too obvious, but have you tried dropping 4 bucks on a new IDE cable?

    Pentium 2.4 G w/ 1 G RAM

I can not remember the MB manufacturer. Back when I bought the PC, I think I narrowed it down to Gigabyte and ASUS, which is not likely helpful.

Replacing the MB integrated IDE controller with a PCI IDE controller is a real possibility.

IIRC MBs can be had for $100 or so. My biggest concern is that I want this to be the last time I f*ck with this PC for a good long time. This is worth the price difference between the new MB and the PCI IDE controller.

Gosh! OK. Good one, Fatty, but you're headin' for a streak of non-quality posts there... I was warned before, and it served me right... I will force you into quality posting... ;)

I would just buy a PCI card and try it with a separate IDE cable...

I found someone close to my house who has been repairing PCs for 20+ years. From the first set of tests it looks like the HDD has some unreadable, unrecoverable blocks which may mean the HDD is well on the way to being pooched. The MB tests came back clean.
